anole with shedding problem... help!

sleepofapples Aug 23, 2005 01:15 PM

i have a brown anole i caught in daytona almost two years ago... hes been fine until about two weeks ago when i noticed he was having problems shedding.. hes in a tank with some treefrogs and the humidity is around 80% .. they get misted 3 times a day... he shed the skin on his body and feet, but didnt shed the skin on his head.. and now his eyes are sealed shut.. i have tried soaking him in warm water and using the shed ease stuff we have at the store i work at but he still hasnt opened his eyes... he is losing weight (im assuming this is because he cant see to eat the crickets) and i am panicking... does anyone know how to fix this? i called my vet and he said to do the things that i have already done... but i dont want my little one to starve to death! should i try force feeding until i can get this straightened out? what could have caused this?

ok.. just in case this helps.. hes in a 30 gallon with tons of live plants, driftwood, and a large water section in the bottom.. i have some turtle eye clear for my box turtles, i was wondering if this might help? i dont want to make it worse or blind him permenently... hes taken to sitting with his back legs in the shallow part of the water the last couple days.. his eyes are not pussy or swollen, just closed..

Maybe you could try using a damp washcloth and holding it over the spot where there is shed for awhile, and then maybe very gently rubbing it with you finger (gently). It couldn't hurt to try.

You have him living in a unhealthy inviorment.( no offence ) Of course I'm assuming that you have all those frogs lizards living together. Anole are territorail, they need alot of room...30gallons is pretty small for all those reptiles. If You didn't curaintine him then he probaly caught somthing from the frogs. He's probaly not used to be around so many things.Anoles like living by themselves. I really don't have much advice, but to stick your hand in the cage and poke him.Make him walk around,or grab him and put him under the heat lamp.Other than that all I can say is pray for the critter. I hope your lizard gets better

Oh and one more thing. 80% humity is prety humid. You should buy him a seperate cage. He can't be in such a crowded place thats hunid. hope this helps

actually in that tank there are only 3 frogs... there are about 15 tanks in my house... sorry if i didnt make that clear... i might still be wrong.. maybe that is too many creatures in one tank.... from what ive read anoles do ok singularly or in pairs in a 20 gallon.. at any rate.. what size would you or anyone else suggest.. i have a spare 40 gallon and a 30 extra tall at my disposal right now.. i quaranteen all my animals for at least 45 days when introducing them to a tank with other animals.. so that shouldnt be a problem.. havent had anything in that tank get sick and its been set up for about a year and a half... i have read that they light the humidity slightly lower .. around 70%.. i thought he would be in 75-80 being as that he was from florida.. again.. i could be wrong... i wouldnt think that the humidity being high would affect his shedding though? ive started force feeding him phoenix worms (tiny high calcium worms that look sort of like fuzzy waxworms) and he seems to be perking up a bit.. but his eyes are still closed...

Well I really don't know what to tell u then...Try putting him on his basking branch. They need heat for energy so maybe that might help. i've had to do that before with mine when he was real week.
