one more litter dropped late last night

rainbowsrus Aug 23, 2005 02:19 PM

Sorry no pics, was too tired to even think of the camera. 28 babies and 1 slug.

Jeff, was thinking about one of your comments in an earlier post, you indicated your typical litter/clutch would be babies still in eggsac with yolk attached and you would normally let them sit and soak up yolk. I have seen that on a few individuals this year and prior years but mainly on mine the yolk sac is non existant, just the slimey outer membrane and clear goo inside.

...one more congrats. It sounds like you're doing terrific this season. I have only had 2 litters and all of those came out more like you described. Just a clear membrane with an umbilical cord and no noticeable yolk sac.

Yeah, I am having a GREAT year, even the one litter with seven slugs and three still born was a good sized litter with 21 babies.

Hey, did that Gravid female you posted a few days ago drop her litter yet?

Btw, one thing I noticed this year for three of the four litters was the female cleared out her urates within 24 hours of birth. Not a lot but a little bit of solid urates (a few small gravel sized pellets) and enough liquid to soak about a square foot of floor.

Now that I've said that, one of my remaining three has doine just that today....will have to wait and see.

Interesting you mentioned that about the urates. When I cleaned on Sat my female had 5 or 6 little tiny urate pellets, but I recognized them and never thought anything of them. It seemed in my experience different from what I found from my proven female. I'm still waiting for her to go and she has access to a warmer and cooler spaghnum moss hide in her cage. Lately I have considered replacing the newsprint with cypress mulch, but have not done so. Since I'm new, I only have the 2 experiences to draw from and that snake held true on both deliveries. I have been watching relentlessly and if this gal starts cruising or changes her pattern I will likely put some mulch in there for her. Everything seems okay, but I am concerned none the less. I am just waiting to see what happenens. My speculation is that she is indeed grsvid, but not full-term yet. I have so much to learn.

Dave,
...You seem to be having an outstanding year. Those are consistently BIG litters. I have only had a few babies that have had great big globs of yolk like that one of yours. Mine typically have small yolks when they are born and absorb them over a couple of hours. I only rarely have them with no yolk material at all like this litter I had last week.

It's been a wild ride the last week, 3 litters for 72 babies within a couple of days. Even though I've been expecting the litters, still is catching me off gaurd to have soooooooooo many.

Last year I had 6 litters and 5 of them averaged 10 each (52 total). Also had a whopper litter of 31 from what I was thinking was a dud female. She had given me nuttin but slugs for three prior years. had her for sale and was almost sold twice. I left her in the breeding colony figuring nuthing to lose and bam, she got the idea that being cared for, well fed, cleaned up after, living in the lap of luxury was not so bad, better give up the babies if'n she wanted to stay.

Your snake room must be getting crowded. So many little arrivals! Good thing you've got mice out the wazoo. Lots of mouths to feed.

Hey Caitlin, crowded only begins to describe it, remember the cage I used as a nursery for the shoeboxes? 4' X 2' X 4 1/2' It's stuffed to the gills, not room for one more box. I've boved my large boa from the lower section (4' x 2' x 18" to make room for the coming arrivals.

Yeah I've got the mouse production ramped up to full volume, must have 20 - 30 pregnant females and keep tossing more in with the breeder males. Even opened up two more breeder cages, now up to 6.

I ran out of shoeboxes to put all the babies in (or at least ones that already had ventilation holes from prior usage). I was out in the garage drilling and drilling and drilling. Now ready for the next litter or two. Hope to get some more sold before the next ones come.

Congratulations on another clutch. It sounds like you're doing really well this year. I have to admit, I'm really getting anxious waiting out my own clutches. It's like the worst feeling followed by the best feeling.
