First day of class introductions...... please participate

tristan Aug 23, 2005 04:24 PM

Hey fellow uro lovers, upon Elizabeth's previous message, I think it would be fun for everyone to reintroduce themselves on the forum to get the flow back to our beloved forum. (I make my students do this if the class is small enough to sort of break the ice)

Please include:

Your Name, Sex, Age, Location, Occupation and how you fell in love with uros/herps. And if you want, include a picture of yourself. It would be nice to put a face to everyone on here!

My name's Tristan and I'm a 26 (soon to be 27 this Saturday) year old male living in Orange County, California. I'm a 5th year graduate student (with 2 more years to go) in Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine specializing in Mathematical Finance. Born in the Philippines and raised in Long Beach, Ca. since I was 7.

I fell in love with reptiles when I was in the 6th grade. My teacher, Mrs. DeFields was the science teacher and our classroom was a zoo! We had 4 snakes, 5 land turtles, 20 frogs, 4 bearded dragons, 3 tarantulas, 30 mice, a possom family (my teacher's pets) and 1 scorpion. Mrs. DeFields caught me observing the beardies one day and asked if I wanted to be an 'animal monitor.' This would entail coming in to class about 30 min early everyday to clean, feed and take care of the animals. I jumped up and down and joined the 5 other animal monitors. I was the only one (other than Mrs. DeFields) that could handle 'Goliath', a huge tarantula and the snakes. I could remember every animal we had.

Since then I've been a herper though my dream has not yet been fulfilled. I've been a student all my life so I've lived in apartments. One day when I get situated in my own house I will build a herp room in my backyard.

Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to get the ball rolling....

Here's a pic of me a couple years ago (although I pretty much look the same) with my mom and my sister at my cousin's 18th birthday.

i am vonnie. i am female and i am 25. my current location is right outside of san diego in la mesa, however i am from south carolina and i am moving to DC in december since grad school will be finished (yay!) i am primarily a student, more like a thesis writer, i also tutor for the AVID program at a high school and i am also the jewelry girl at target which is for my moving and "i want to go to vegas" fund.
i got my first reptile when i was out looking for a fish. i did not really see any that i liked and the guy told me reptiles were much easier to take care of. he sat a collared lizard on me and he ran up my arm to my shoulder and tongue flicked my head. i said i would take him. i had walter the first for a year before my inexperience killed him and i have not lost a single lizard since because of lack of knowledge.

i don't really have any pictures of me, but here is a picture of madam helga and sir hugo turtlehead

Hi all...my name is Pam, I am female and I am twice your ages and that's all I'm going to say about that. LOL I currently reside in Wisconsin but have a home in Florida where I will be moving in early 2007 permanently. I have 5 children (one son adopted from the Philippines) and 4 grandchildren. I am basically a housewife who also works with land and real estate acquisition. I fell in love with uros about 5 years ago when a friend of mine who worked in a pet shop let me hold a big mali. I do not have any pictures of myself either, but I am 5' tall, blue eyed with red hair and of Scottish ancestry. I enjoy this forum immensely, a lot of very nice people on here.

Hello, we are Mark and Tina. I'm 30 and Tina is 26. We live in Va. Beach. I'm a claims adjuster and she is a veterinarian assistant. We both graduated from Old Dominion Univ. She has a degree in Biology and mine is in Environmental Health. We got into reptiles about 8-9 years ago through a good friend who is now a veterinarian. Tina's first was a White's treefrog named Eli. My first reptile was Chief, a veiled chameleon.(see below for our current family!)
We've always liked uros, but held off on getting them until we could find babies.
Here is a picture of us from about 2 years ago.

Hi Tristan,

The common name is a yellow ackie aka varanus acanthurus brachyurus. That is my big boy Dorado who weighs in at 342 grams. He is a sweetheart. Congrats on the blue tegu, those are awesome. You'll have to share an OT pic. This was fun finding out a a little about everyone. Take care!

Hi, my name is Cathy and I am 44. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I fell in love with uros about 2 1/2 years ago. My son brought one home and I was hooked. He still has his one and I now have nine and would love to have more if I had the space.

benedita Aug 24, 2005 12:23 PM

I am Benedita, am 32 and live in NYC. I work in a not-for-profit focussing on environmental & farmland issues.

As a child I was interested in reptiles, but my mom was creeped out by herps. (We did have rabbits & cats.) As a teenager I worked at an exotics shop in Massachusetts, but it was closed by the state because it sold some animals it shouldn't have. (Mass has restrictions again selling or keeping animals that have related species on CITES lists. For example: no monitor lizards b/c kimodo dragons are endangered.)

More than a decade ago I was introduced to uros (specifically a large, friendly egyptian) and became fascinated... besides, we were both vegetarian, it was sympatico. After a few months of researching and cage building, I acquired an import adult mali uro and illicitly transport it across state lines. She moved with me to NYC seven years ago. She died on Mothers Day two years ago.

Back in January I acquired a pair of uscb yearling ornates. They just keep getting fatter and fatter. (I have been tracking their weight; they typically gain 2% of their weight each week, but every 6 weeks they gain 12%.)

I also kept an abandoned ball python for about 4 years before finding a new home for him last December.

Ciao

My name is Bri (short for Briana) I'm currently attending UCF in Orlando FL. I'm a junior (age, 19) and an english major. I was first intoduced to uro's when my boyfriend was given one by a mutual friend who was clearing her animal "farm" to move to Belize. She had 3 and he aquired her red Nigerian Uro. His name is Koopa and i may have fallen in love with him before my boyfriend did. Realizing this he got me my first uro, a baby mali (Zazu) about 3 months ago. I have recently gotten a 10 month old Somali (KonTiki), too.

I am a 28 year old female who lives in Indiana, but who still has strong ties to Wisconsin. I wear many hats professionally. In my job at PUrdue I am a Project Manager, a functional Manager, an Instructional Designer and a trainer. In my spare time I enjoy teaching undergraduate courses at Purdue University in Computer Technology.

I actually wanted a turtle, not a Uro. I got a second hand 55 gallon tank, with the intent of resealing it and getting turtles. However the resealing was never successful, and me and a roommate at the time went to the petstore to see what could live in the tank w/o water. We found Archie there. It was basically love at first sight, even though I knew nothing about him. I went home and read up what little I could find on Uromastyx, and went back and bought him the next day. Archimedes was named after the owl in "The sword in the Stone" (Disney Version) because I thought he looked smart. Sadly, he was not, lol. So it quickly became Archie. Archie lived with me through undergraduate and graduate school, and only recently passed away. I now have only one Uro, an Egyptian named Zuberi Mosca Khu (Mosca), who turned 1 year old this month.

It is such a pleasure to know all of you!

It means "Strong Protected Mosca". Zuberi and Khu mean strong and protected in Egyptian. I am a firm believer that everything should have a "full name" to be used in formal occasions, or when they are getting in trouble.

Mosca actually means fly in spanish I guess. I ran into the word in a book I was reading and for whatever reason it struck me as a great name.

>>Your Name, Sex, Age, Location, Occupation and how you fell in love with uros/herps. And if you want, include a picture of yourself. It would be nice to put a face to everyone on here!

At first I thought, "what a goofy idea" but after reading the posts, I take it back!

Ok,
My name is Jim (as in Jimbo) and we moved to Cotati in Sonoma county, California a year ago. Right now I work at a major grocery store where I've been for 21 years, but will be ending it all to take on part-time work and get my degree. It's been pretty scary to think about, but it's only going to get worse where I'm at. As for age, well let's just say I don't admit, act like, or feel like my actual age. I'm just fighting it all the way. We have a recently turned two year old, and another due in January.

I like riding my motorcycles (sport riding and racing), building web sites, building custom databases, and most of all, watching Tyler, my son, grow up.

I've always had snakes as a kid, mostly garder and gophers that I caught locally, but when my wife broke her aquarium while cleaning it, I told her not to throw it away and I'll use it. I put in some green anoles which were cool for a while, but got tired of "raising" crickets.
After spending considerable amount of time looking for something unique, I ran into a Mali uro at a reptile store (a reputable place, not really a "store" ) and new that was it. Approximately 5 years later, I'm where I'm at now. I would have more uros if I could afford it and had the space, but that will have to wait.

I thinkg that's it. Here's a pic of the family when we were at a friend's wedding. It's the only one I have of me where I don't have a helmet on.

Oh yeah, and...

My name is Eve, and I live in New Jersy, this picture is from last year, KONG a huge collared uses my hair as a vine so he can sit on top of my head. I wanted the pic of him, so stood infront of the mirror to get it.

I'm older, but YOUNGER and had my kids at 18 yrs. old so they are grown, married, I now have 5 young grandchildren (Humans, not lizards, LOL)
I stay at home, so I have lots of time for the critters, which I have loved since I think I came into this world.

I have had many different pets over the years, monkey, parrots, skunks, chinchillas, always wanted to be a Vet, but never went in that direction as far as schooling. So rescues, broken winged birds, bunnies that cats damaged, hurt or orphaned squirrels, always seemed to find there way to my house.

My love for uro's and lizards kind of came as I had a stained glass shop in one of our bedrooms, I would create, and sell pieces.
I got a bearded dragon and he was in there for company very COOL guy named Auggie. Then while on forums and meeting people I learned/ and was asked if I would like to help a BURNED Egyptian female uromastyx (and thats how I gotmy CLEO)

WONDERFUL PET, so glad I took her back then. Then later I got Crispy the saharan male. Thats about it, I love animals, create stained glass, make indian beaded jewelry,
love plants/ trees/ ALL NATURE, Like to study the Bible

** Love my hubby, and kids, and ENJOY KINGSNAKE.COM, and the .....

Great bunch of lizard buddies that I have met over the years!

Okay, I'll bite. Scott, 29yr male in Orange County, CA. Atletic and single and looking for a cute girl with brains, a nice trim figure, and enjoys cleaning bathrooms in her spare time. Oh wait, wrong forum.

I develop software tools for a local video game company and occasionally get stuck doing artwork still (I moved out here to do movie F/X, but that's a whole differetn story). I'm going to school, startign with an AA in math as a prelude to picking up a BS in aerospace and mechanical engineering. Before I started school I spent most of my time training and racign bicycles competitively. I've designed and built my own hardware that I race with, so I've been deeply immersed in the craft for a while. I tend to try to reduce everything to numbers in one way or another in order to rationalize them... Uromastyx and women don't seem to be reducable nor rationalizable so they keep me on my toes.

I hadn't really ever considered any interest in reptiles until a gentleman at a Solana Succulents in San Diego put a bearded dragon in my hand one day when I was shopping for plants. My interest turned to obsession, a normal thing, and after a bunch of reseach I had a couple Uros in my house a month later. That was October and now I've got twenty five of the little monsters with a few losses along the way. My parents were completely skeptical about how interesting and sweet a "lizard" could be, as I was, but after vacationing here for a week you couldn't keep from from harvesting the hibiscus and teasing the Uros all morning

The obsessive thing shows up in all aspects of my life an dit's entertainment for all. Nothing is truly stagnant with my mind always on the move. A month ago I was thinkng about motorcycles and today I signed the paperwork and take delivery of a two-wheeled monster on Friday... I don't even know how to ride it

i got my ex girlfriend hooked on beardies. i showed her my female hypo and she fell in love! she started surfing the net and reading the kingsnake forums and checking the classifieds MORE than me!
we also went to all the shows and visited kevin at dragon's den and bob from sandfire.
but unfortunately a common love for lizards doesn't always save the relationship!
i would want the woman i spend the rest of my life with to have the same love for animals as i do!

Hi, my name is Tanya and I am 26 years old. I live in Ontario, Canada and am currently unemployed (but getting paid for it at least ). I used to work at Labatt Breweries as a QT microbiologist.
My interest in uros started with a search to find an animal that could live caged up in an apartment. Fish weren't very active so that wouldn't do, birds were too noisy, and rabbits, rats, and other rodents would have to live on substrate that we are not allowed to use in our apartment complex (there goes my opportunity for a hedgehog). After doing some internet research, I stumbled across uros and found them to be an excellent pet for an apartment dweller. I bought my first mali (male named Ra) when he was only 5 months old from a breeder who was selling her last clutch and getting out of the uro breeding business. My husband likes uros too and helps to keep my uro addiction under control.
My general interest in herps started from here. Pretty soon, I bought a male-mimic female (Isis) from a pet store that just got her from someone else. I've successfully bred them and have been blessed with 3 beautiful babies.
