Some opinions wanted about bulls vs. pines...

Bovox Aug 23, 2005 04:48 PM

i'm thinking about getting another pair of snakes, and this time i'm looking for pits. i'm interested in the hwy 277 bulls, or black pines. i'm sure most of you would agree that they are both awesome, but what does everyone else own, and why? thank you!

i have kept black pines and found them great snakes....a hulking shiny black brute of a snake,a captive bred and healthy blk. pine is undeniably impressive, even to non-pituophis fan...the one i had was just a great eater, and super mellow, even when young....as for the bull, all the same is probably true, and then there is also the facct that you can introduce pigment abnormalities(aka 'designer morphs')-and i like some of these a lot-white sided,snow,amelanistic,etc,etc...one possible downside to this is that more morphs=more snakes for sale, which means the market can get flooded-too many sellers and breeders, not enough buyers....sort of like what i think is about to happen,if not already, with ball pythons/cal kings/corns....whereas the black pines, are still more or less 'morph-free'(have seen a very weird 'piebald' phase, though),thus retaining a sort of 'classic, natural appeal',or what have you-and any aberrancies are still yet to be uncovered in them, until, well, who knows.....one last thought-these are decidely more rare in the wild than the bullsnake..let me know if you want some contacts for very trusted pituophis breeders,no matter what you decide...peace

I don't have any black pines, but I do have other pines and bulls. Both types are great eaters but in my bulls, the feeding response can be a pretty healthy one. I have southern, leucistic, and patternless pines, and they all seem pretty laid back. Even when feeding, I can handle then with no problem. Both have large powerful bodies, that can move with surprising speed. Adult black pines are very impressive in appearence and have superb dispositions. Either choice, I think you would be happy with.
