Decomposed Granite question

kaveman Aug 23, 2005 06:57 PM

Is decomposed granite OK to use with Ackies?

Should the decomposed granite be treated for anything such as mites and bacteria? If so what is the best method of doing this?

thanks

No, you could throw it right in the cage. If you wanted, you could throw some in the oven for 30 mins if you wanted to kill any possible living organism--although, DG is so dry, I'm not even sure what could live in it.

The only health issue lies in the fact that DG contains asbestos, but in very small quantities.

So is it OK for monitors? I've heard of some people using it on the forums but I just want to make sure before I put it in.

First, What is dirt? what is DG? what is sand?

Each of these has all different types. I think you can go out and find good suitable types of each. But is that the case?

The DG you buy is not very good, its rough and course and In my extensive opinion, horrible. I know, I know, So and so recomends it on their website. But you may ask, if its so good, why don't they have baby CB monitors for sale, not in a long time. Maybe in their case, its better then what they were using, but I think they called it better because they could phone up a company and have a giant pile dumped on their driveway.

The problem again is, DG is sifted to a certain grade, and that is what makes it useless. Just like store bought sand. If you want to use DG, go dig some up and pick the finer mixes. You know, its free too. FR

Since youve attained a level of experience where you obtain viable eggs on a regular basis, do you currently use ground nesting for all of your monitors? Or do you use any kinds of arboreal nesting boxes?
Im not aware of what all youre breeding at the moment, and if you have any indo varieties.
When you have bred the indo. monitors, did you have success with ground nesting?

What does DG have to do with your question? Isn't this a thread on DG? Are you thinking of using DG in an aboreal nest.

If its not about that, then you may want to start another thread on that, that would be great. FR
