The age of sexual maturity?

lizardheadmike Aug 23, 2005 08:30 PM

What is the average age of sexual maturity for T. rufescens in captivity (when given a proper diet). Does this age differ between the sexes ( males faster than females?)? Thanks- Mike

Just my opinion, but I think you should wait until your reds are atleast three years of age prior to breeding. Females lay huge clutches (mine layed 35 eggs last year at 4 years of age) and this really takes a lot out of them. Males may be sexually mature at a younger age but there's really no need to rush things. From my understanding, blue tegus will breed at much younger ages.

i dont think it so much an age thing as it is size. my male is a horny little guy an he is like 9 months old. but he is like 3.5 feet long. my feamale is 2 but i dont think she is ready because she is still to small. males are recommended at 18 months and females about 3 years. so hopefully the year after next i will have some babies.
