Does it look like my female vine snake gravid?

13lackcat Aug 23, 2005 09:39 PM

She has been getting bigger and has a lump that looks like she has eaten, but she hasn't for almost a month(before now she has eaten fairly readily) She has a male in with her, I have not witnessed them mating, but I'm hoping she's gravid and that there isn't something wrong with her. Oh and she shed last week with no problem.

I have not seen any gravid vinesnakes, so I can't say exactly, but that lump does look like any I have seen for gravid snakes. My guess is that it is something else.

I have had two litters from a female in successive years and it wasn't really obvious that she was gravid. She never developed "lumps" but just looked well fed. I did witness copulations, however, before the second litter, so I suspected that she could be gravid. She only had two young the first time and five the second time (not big litters). Vine snakes tend to be very quick from feeding to defecation (leaving little signs of a previous meal), so if she hasn't fed for awhile, she potentially may be ovulating or gravid. Only a guess.......
