Very mean dumeril boa- please help!

Coreen0420 Aug 23, 2005 10:16 PM

Hi everybody... I posted this on the dumeril boas page too but I realized that many more people post here... My question is this: I went to a reptile show recently and purchased a dumeral boa who was born on July 17 of this year. She is very aggressive and bites non-stop inside or outside of her tank. I left her alone for about a week before handling her and fed her very well before taking her out. All she does is bite me, bite the air or the couch... I know they are very nervous snakes but will she ever calm down and make a good pet? I spent almost an hour with her yesterday and she was striking just as much at the end as she was at the beginning. Can anyone give any advice or personal experience? Thanks so much!

some snakes are just born that way .. a friend of mines dumeril gave birth last night and out of 10 or 11 babies , there were 2 that just came out striking . im sure some can be tamed down .. but some just have that instinct to protect themselves that is too great in them. try not to handle it right after it fed . feeding it wont do much but give it a stronger feeding response. wait a few days and gently take the snake out of its cage and handle it . try this a few times . some snaks do calm down with time .. some dont . if she continues to be like that , then i believe you got one of those hard asses ..lol . the thing is , everytime you buy an animal , you are taking a chance . maybe the animal is insecure in its enclosure for whatever reason . maybe you are waiting too long and pausing before picking it up . just reach in there and dont hesitate .. just reach in there and softly pick it up showing it that you arent gonna hurt it and maybe it will calm down soon enough . good luck.

Thanks... I hope she calms down. I lift her out right away and handle her and she then starts to strike at me. I hope I can maybe trade her for a calm one when I see the guy at the next show; I just want a good pet that I can handle!
