baby SHL growth & new homes.

ninetynine Aug 23, 2005 11:34 PM

Does anyone happen to know the avarage time from baby to adult in P. Hernandesi? or perhaps baby to juvinile?

At some point I'm going to need to find new homes for most of my baby short-horns. I figure the best way to find phrynosoma savvy people would be over the internet. but that creates the problem of moving the lizard over long distances. It seems like a lot of people over-night lizards. though sending them through the mail seems so reckless, is this safe? do they need to be adults to survive such a trip?

Or better yet, if there are any of you horned lizard veterians here that live near phoenix, and would love to have a little P. Hernandesi, let me know. (they're free to good homes)

I should have asked this first, but it's legal to give/sell P. Hernandesi right? I checked the laws in AZ but all I could find was that it is legal to take up to 4 from the wild.

THANK YOU FOR QUALIFYING THE PERSON AS NEEDING TO BE A "HORNED LIZARD VETERAN"!!! I'm so glad you're not going to give them to just anybody. Hope they all find good homes! (I have a hunch they will!) I'm certainly not that veteran but I know some on this site are ~ good luck!

You can legally have 4 horned lizards in your posession of a specie (in Arizona) if I understand the law correctly. You might consider talking to Cable Houge @ Phrynosoma.com he might be able to find a home for them. There are other issues around this as well. Was the female taken under a license? If so, you might want to call Fish & Game and ask permission as to what to do with he progeny. IF they will let you export them, overnight does work and is safe. I'm sure there may be some of the people on the forum that would want one or tow, again be careful do not give these to just anyone as they are harder than most species to take care of and most people are not going to have the experience or committment to take care of these long term.

You cannot sell Hernandezi, this would be illegal-you can give them away, but I would be clear on the law first or be in sinc with Arizona Fish & Game...........

In fact they have to be given away because of the possession limit of 4 lizards. They cannot be sold or traded. I am not sure how long you can keep them but there is a time limit I believe-maybe 4 months or something like that. Tom

In Arizona it is 12 months.

Here is the section on dealing with progeny from AZ G&F
"Wildlife and the progeny of wildlife possessed pursuant to this rule may only be
disposed of by gift or as directed by the Department, except that wildlife not
removed from the area where captured may be released. Lawfully possessed
live wildlife may be exported.
A combined total of wildlife and the progeny of wildlife possessed pursuant to this
rule shall not exceed the possession limit established by the current Commission
order governing that species, except that the progeny of reptiles and amphibians
may be held in captivity in excess of the possession limit for 12 months from the
date of birth or hatching. Before or upon reaching 12 months of age, progeny of
reptiles and amphibians in excess of the possession limit shall be disposed of by
gift or as directed by the Department."
