one eyed leo questions.

my_chem_ Aug 23, 2005 11:59 PM

Just so everyone knows, I already own a female leo and have had her for about 5 years so while no expert I'm not new to leos. I just felt like it would be a good idea to ask some questions concerning a new leo I've gotten that might require some extra care and any advice is greatly appreciated.
(this might be long)

Okay well today me and my friend were getting food for our leos when the lady asked what we had. We told her we had leopards and she told us a customer of hers gave her a one eyed leo that got into a fight with a tankmate. She offered us the lizard for free which I was suprised at since like you'll see s/he is a very pretty gecko. After seeing him, I decided to take him home. I wouldnt normally do this but I knew I had a extra tank and heat pad at home and he was just the cutest thing ever. Now the eye he cant see out of isnt an eyesore(no pun intended) and it looks fully healed. It basically just looks like his eye is closed, but all the time. He is also missing some toes, I'm not too sure how that happened. Other than his/her missing eye and toes, its a breathtaking gecko, and looks COMPLETELY healthy otherwise.
I have him/her set up now on paper towels and he/she looks to be about 4 months old? I havent raised a leo in a while so I cant quite tell. Im pretty sure its a girl but being with it being young im not too sure.
Basically my question is do you think it might have problems eating/functioning with only one eye? It ate a cricket a little bit ago but it missed a couple times. Im thinking I might just have to hold its food in front of it to make it easier for the little guy.
Well anyway any advice/tips from people who have had a one eyed gecko before or anyone that just wants to help is greatly appreciated again.

I don't have a leo with a missing eye but I'd hand feed it then again I hand feed all of mine anyway. I know they're spoiled rotten little brats but this way I know that they're eating and I know how much they eat. If you hand feed with your actual hands just don't jerk away if the poor baby misses and gets your fingers, sometimes one of my males misses and he feels like he's done something wrong so he goes to his hide but it happens so just be prepared for the possible bites.

I don't think you'll have any problems with him/her. It would Probably be easier on the gecko if you fed it slow moving prey (waxworms, mealworms, crix with their legs twisted off). But I think it will do fine. Certainly looks no worse for wear

What an awesome free find! Sure is a very nice looking hypo tangerine! Congrats to you.
