New Dragon..No Little crickets

johnbort2 Aug 24, 2005 07:06 AM

Hello all! I got my bearded dragon a couple days ago. I had done a lot of research before I got them, so I knew that that they shouldn't get crickets too big(none wider than space between the eyes). His body is approx 3.5-4 inches, so I think he is approx 3-4 months old. All the pet store had was regular size crickets, so I purchased some just to give him something to eat. Should I not feed those until the small ones come in the mail...maybe just feed him wax worms or meal worms? I reluctantly have fed him 4 of the smallest adult crix. Any suggestions? He seems not to have problems swallowing em, but don't want him getting tummy probs. Thanks!

I would personally stay away from the large crickets, give him the veggies and fruits and wax until you get small.
You can ask the people at the petstore to pick out the smallest crickets they have, or find a pet store that has different size crickets.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately he is not eating many veggies. I think I will just offer veggies in the morning and then worms in the evening. I will have them overnight the small crix.

How big is the Dragon? My Dragons are usually anywhere from 11-16 inches at that age so they can get adult crickets. Just use the space between the dragons eyes as a guide. Also at 8-10 inches my guys are eating 1/2-3/4 inch crickets it really depends on the size of the beardie not the age.
Good Luck!!
Thanks,
Randy

Feeding newly shed mealworms would be fine in place of crickets, as well as wax worms. I would watch his digestion for a few days to make sure he is passing the crickets okay.

I've had a variety of luck ordering crickets online. When my guy was eating voraciously, it was winter here. I had shipments show up dead, but the company would always replace. I had to order them online. The nearest pet store had tiny crickets, but wanted $.15 each for them!
