Mealworms & Crickets

loril Aug 24, 2005 09:50 AM

I was wondering if it's healthy to feed a diet of say just mealies and silkworms or do you have to give crickets as well. I think crickets are kinda gross but I want what is healthiest for my leo. I keep a small jar lid of vitamins in the enclosure at all times along with water.
If you do have to offer crickets in with the diet, how long can you leave them in without worrying about them snacking on the leo? I put one good sized cricket in with her the other day for about an hour. She didn't eat it so I took it out. She has eaten all the meal worms I've given her though.
I'd appreciate any input.
Thanks!

I'd say a staple diet of mealies and silks are okay. Most leos will go after anything that's moving, if your leo didn't eat the cricket maybe it was already full, or maybe shedding will occur soon, sometimes they won't eat when about to shed because they eat their shedded skin.

Thanks. I just don't like dealing with the crickets but would if need be. I think she shed just recently though, she had just a little dead skin left when I got her, only had her four days.

She might not like crickets at all. I have a girl that won't eat mealworms or silkworms and will only eat crickets then again none of my other will touch silkworms either so you're lucky if she'll eat silks. I hate crickets too but if she doesn't like them then don't worry as long as she's eating what she likes.

I just wanted to say that Jake you were 100% correct in the shedding assumption. I was kinda worried yesterday because she had gotten this whitish hazy appearance all over. I know that they get kinda hazy before they shed but I hadn't seen a leo right before shedding and I was kinda freaked out! My uros dont look quite like that and they dont shed all at once either. Needless to say I kept checking on her and the skin was peeling off her head! She is now a very beautiful girl. She is a super hypo carrot tail that is very orange.

YAY! I got one right! LOL. They are VERY dull when about to shed, the first time I saw the dull colors I almost returned mine to the petstore because I figured it was sick. But then I didn't know nearly as much as I do now. Seems like you're all set, glad I could help.
