Help!!! Sick Frilly!

rayven79 Aug 24, 2005 12:41 PM

Hi everyone!
I have a frilled dragon, about 3 years old, male. He is a picky eater and a picky little guy. Tends to be more comfortable around me rather than my husband.
Long Story short he has stopped eating recently. He had a few worms the other night but very few and lost interest. The last two days his eyes have been shut and I noticed he had a "dried substance" that was keeping his eyes closed.
I tried finding a vet that would take me seriously and see Royal (that is his name) but no one will call me back. I was able to clean the eye area and he was able to open his eyes. I had no idea what else to do. So, I checked up on him yesterday and his left eye is closed again, when he opened his left eye there is a mucus film covering his right eye. I know he has got to be in pain. He NEVER acts like this. He refused to eat crickets...he never does that!
I don't have anyone to take him to...and I have no idea what to do. He is also getting extremly skinny.
I am worried Sick...
Can anyone suggest anything or have had this happen in the past???
Thank you for reading!
Flo

Sounds like some eye infection, but I too am a novice. I would try and clean area with warm water and/or saline solution. Try and post at this site in the bearded dragon section. They're a few members who have frilled and beardies and frilleds have a pretty smiliar "system"(that's the only place I gotten any feed back on frilleds). Funny our guy is very picky too and neurotic (sp?). He is more comfortable with me than my husband too. We have dragons who get to run around once a day, but he stresses so much we have never really tried.

I would try to find a vet who sees turtles. It should be more common and our vet kinda specializes in turtles and feels there is enough similarities to assit his diagonis with our dragons.

Good luck!

Well im a new owner of a half dead frillie , a rescue, so i cannot give advices about frillies. But i have a leo gecko and the same thing happened to my leo gecko several months ago.She could not open her eyes and because of that she didnt want to eat.I suppose lizards dont eat when they cannot see.So i cleaned my gecko's eyes and i put some eye drops and i change her diet.I was keeping her mealworms in oats only and oats alone dont have too many vitamins.Lack of vitamin A can cause eye problems so i started giving her vitamin A ( one drop each 3 days) and i added carrotts to her diet. But i cleaned her eyes every day at least 2 times a day and i forced her to open her eyes even for a few minutes because closed eyes can become infected and i didnt want her to become blind. After a few weeks she opened her eyes and never had eyes problems or lack of appetite again. But i learned my lesson and now im gut loading her mealworms with NESTON, a baby food very rich in vitamins.
