The Largest/Longest Snake in Captivity

serplover Jul 17, 2003 06:24 PM

I'm posting this in several forums. What is the longest/largest snake currently in captivity? Is it in a zoo or zoo type facility or possibly under a private person's care? Pictures if possible, please.

It's Baby, a 27 foot, 400-pound Burmese python at some reptile park in the midwest.

You sure about Baby's length and weight there?

I would dare say Bob Clark's "Fluffy" is in close competition with Baby at somewhere around 27' and 310 pounds.

Anyone have a link to a site that has current length and weight on Baby?

I'm not sure anyone's ever sure about length and weight claims, except the owneers, and maybe not even them.

At any rate, Dave Barker posted in another forum that the San Antonio Zoo's retic is the longest, and quite possibly the heaviest, and that Baby is obese and probably exagerrated as to length. I believe him.

Hey mrci,
I why do you think baby is obese? I heard she only eats once every month! And i heard that from her owner too.

Thanks,
Ben

Once a snake is obese, it is hard to get rid of without a long fast, and it would easily be maintained with even a once per month feeding. But there is no doubt in my opinion that that poor snake is extremely obese. She doesn't look 27 feet to me, more like 22 or 23,.. but even if she WERE 27 feet, 400 pounds would indicate severe obesity.

What Dave said was that that retic was the longest and heaviest snake in captivity that "was not obese". His point being that obese weights should not be relevant. While I agree with this 99%, I did not like the way he said that Baby is "just a fat burmese". While obcenely fat, she is still an impressive snake and it is not her fault that her owner/s care more about a world weight record than about their snakes' health. I am paraphrasing here, but I am quite sure this is what he meant.

By "just a fat Burmese" he meant that her length claims are exagerrated, and the weight claims as well, and that retics get significantly larger (which was certainly my understanding anyway, until I found out about Baby, who apparently may not be quite so heavy, nor nearly so long, as they say).

Not to comment on whether baby is obese or not but to my knowledge which might not be correct and if anyone on the forum knows for fact then please correct me ..but im pretty sure that Lou Daddano's Baby from his serpent safari zoo in illinois was in the guinness book of world records for the largest snake in captivity.Im not sure what the year was that she was inducted but she was recorded at 403lbs and 25 ft at the time and she was 24 yrs old at the time.Iwould assume that the snake would have to be accurately measured and weighed for her attain that record.

No matter if Baby is over weight or not,it's still one impressive snake!! I mean the owners should worry about her health but at 27 feet long( I think she is more like 24-25 feet) she shouldn't be 400 pounds.I don't know what her exact weight should be but I am guessing she needs to lose 80 pounds. They only feed her once a mth..or so I have read. I seen her on discovery channel. One of the care takers suffered extreme injuries when baby got around him,he passed out in a matter of seconds. I am sure she would have considered him a meal if the fellow keepers did not get her off him.

There's an Aussie guy in classifieds - looking to locate a giant retic in order to send to a zoo there.
