Loosing sleep over underweight cresteds

totalcrestedgal Aug 24, 2005 06:31 PM

Hi all. I'm a new member. Have 3 cresteds at home, all very young, and was looking to possibly get more. Found this forum this past week. GREAT INFO- very helpful so far.
Always check out the cresties in the local stores while I buy supplies for mine. Was reading info on this site regarding average weights and how to sex my cresties, anxious about growth rates and plans for housing when they can be sexed. As best I can tell, mine are doing fine, but I'm concerned about some I looked at in a local chain store. They looked ok to me until the sales girl told me they had been there for over a year. They are fed only crickets. No baby food because" it spoils too fast" I got another sales person to allow me to weigh them and they only weight about 17g each.(had a scale in the car I had just purchased to weigh mine) Isn't this too light?? As I'm just learning, I'm not 100% sure. Should I go back and "save" them?? Give them some qaulity of life- their enclosure in VERY small. If they are underwieght, but a year old, can they be sexed?? Will they grow more if fed properly? Am I over reacting?
PLEASE HELP THIS WORRYWART!!!!

That is extremely light for adult cresteds. Do not try to save them, you will only perpetuate the cycler, because most likely the pet store will get more. The only thing you can really do is educate that pet store on proper husbandry.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input.Yah, I thought of that vut I feel so bad for the little guys/girls. They said the only reason they got them in was for a sale, and only one sold. 2 are left. It burns me up that htey know they're not taking care of them properly. They would have been great pets too- wounderful coloring. They both appear to be female at this point.
Thanks for responding.
