Alright, where do you guys get your incubators from or are they easy to build?

stevodod Aug 24, 2005 07:03 PM

Hey,

I see very little for sale in the form of mutiple-clutch incubators, just the single hova-bators. What do you guys use?

Thanks,

Steve Harrison

She sure did do a great job! And she's now back to pounding down jumbo rats! Couldn't have asked for a smoother first year!

Do you really feed some of your ball pythons, jumbo rats, arn't they too large.

thanks

steve

Normally - no - however - this particular girl has been feeding on jumbo rats for well over a year and handles them like candy (that's what her previous owners had been feeding her).

I normally prefer to feed her two large rats - but she does get an occasional jumbo - honestly I can barely tell the difference between a large and jumbo (they are frozen thawed and quite a bit smaller than you'd imagine)

Anyway - nothing goes into her (or any of my other snakes for that matter) that has a larger girth than they do. I would not chance feeding a jumbo rat to any of my other snakes - even the girls that are bigger than her.

Have you successfully let the mother incubate her eggs, could you tell me more about the conditions you provided for her, heat, humidity, hot spot ect and the outcome. and would you say that this is perfectly acceptable for incubation purposes.

thanks alot

steve

Hey,

Still chuckling over that one....heheheheheheh

Really, though- don't most breeders use incubators?

Thanks,

Steve Harrison

Big breeders have walk in incubators. Not so big breeders usually are stuck with refurbishing old refrigerators, coolers, etc. to suit thier needs. It doesn't look too hard if you are handy - just need a heating element - thermostat - fan and um ... hell I don't know --- figure out some way to keep all your eggs at the right temperature and humidity - LOL

If you just have a couple of clutches I hear Casey Hulse at Natures Spirit Snake Shacks makes some great ones.

I built a make shift incubator. I have 8 ball python eggs in there right now and today is day 57 so any day now! I used a 10 gal aquarium and put 4 bricks in there, filled it to the top of the bricks with water and put a submersable aquarium heater (an expensive one for tighter temp tolerances). The I put the eggs in a rubbermaid container (with a couple vent holes) half filled with moist vermiculite and set the container on the bricks. I adjusted the heater until the eggs were being kept at 88.5 F which was at 90F degrees for the heater. I put another plastic container lid on top of the aquariums screen top to hold in the moisture, and a folded towel on top of that to hold in the heat. I put it in my guest bathroom (gotta love the wife that deals with that), closed off the A/C vent and kept the door closed. I checked the temp of the eggs with a laser thermometer and fanned the eggs every 4 or 5 days or so, the temp was very consistantly 88.5. This isn't the ideal incubator, but I was out of town for 5 weeks and two days after I returned she laid them, so I had to hustle up something to keep them alive until my friend with a incubator came back to town. It was working so well, I decided to just go with it. Keep your fingers crossed, anyday now, I'll have 8 grandsnakes.
