breeding size

cj1 Aug 24, 2005 09:15 PM

I've had a male and female for 2 years now but their age is unknown. I need to know what a good breeding size and weight is. Is it harmful to the female if bred to early?

How large/small were they when you got them? If they were 4' or so, and now you've had them an additional two years, they should be more than ready. As far as giving a size for breeding, that can vary. I have proven breeders that are barely over 4' and some that are nearing 8'. Going by age, I would lean toward 3 year old males, and 4 year old females. Yeah, you can probably cut that down to 2 years/3 years respectively, but it doesn't hurt to err on the side of caution. You could possibly stunt growth, shorten life span, or even have a female get bound up and die breeding her too early. Hope that helps a little. Best of luck in your breeding efforts. Take care

Paul
