Parasite question........... I think

stcloudbadger Aug 24, 2005 10:23 PM

Adoni is almost 6 months old (14.5 inches and 224 grams)and I took him to the vet because I noticed his stools were really fowl smelling and runny( more than usual) and I thought it would be good to get his first check up. They tested his stool sample and it came back negative for parasites. The vet said that he still could have parasites and prescribed 5 doses of Panacur. We finished that but he is now going 2-3 days between bowel movements. No possibitity of impaction, we use shelf liner and appropriate sized crickets and silk worms. The vet wants to check him agsin in a couple of weeks and give him a another preventative dose of Panacur. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Torque is 5 1/2 month old and only poops ever 2-3 days. If your dragon had runny poo then he would be passing it more frequently. Sometimes medicine interfers with the natural gut bacteria and it needs to be replaced with probiotic, I can't remember the brand name that alot of people use but someone should come along who will know it. You can also ask your vet, he should know what it is.

Acidopholiz by Pet Authority. www.reptilesupply.com
Panacur is really harsh on their system, so it would be good to give him this. If he tests negative for parasites again...I wouldn't do another treatment. Too much and it's dangerous. Good luck with your dragon.

Thanks for the help. A good long bath resulted in his first poo(huge)in four days. He seems to have normal behavior othewise. Thanks for the recommendation of the supplement.

First thing is find another vet that knows how to treat Heprs, especially Lizards as this one sure did not. Check out HerpVetConnection.com

Also the acidolphiliz can be found online at ReptileSupply.com in their supplement sections, its a few pages back in that. I think your dragon could really use some of this now for a few weeks to get his gut fauna back in shape.

In the future, do not let anyone, including a vet treat your animal for something that is not there, the only exception to that should be if all test and other things fail and you are losing the animal, but no one can find out why, they may shotgun with antibiotics as a long shot..... other than that, the meds are too harsh or do damage to bearded dragons ot at minimum mess up their gut fauna so bad and it takes weeks if not months to restore
