Problem with hiding?

heffner2212 Aug 24, 2005 10:38 PM

Ok well I just got my first blood in the mail. She is gorgeous and so tiny at 18". Anyway shes not using either of her hides she curls next to them? Is this a problem or is she just not used to them yet? Also I am going to feed her tomorrow. A small mouse. Live then when she eats ill wean her on to pre-killed. ! more thing...I removed the cool hide for a few hours and she curled next to the water dish? Is that ok Or when shes this young should Ijust stick to a hide on each end.?
thanks a lot
Mike

Mike you just got her.Make sure to KEEP BOTH HIDES in the enclosure.Let her get used to her enclosure.FEEDING her tommorow is WAY too SOON.Wait AT LEAST A WEEK !!! If she's not comfortable and you try to feed her,she might get FREAKED and not feed for awhile.Don't chance it,and just WAIT a WEEK.I personally would try FROZEN Thawed first. Then live after a few attemps. GOOD LUCK,keep us posted and post some pics when you can. ASH LOPEZ

Ditto....

and what are you using for substrate? How big is the cage??

i never give my snakes a chance to get used to their hides. theyre going in there whether they like it or not! (lol jk). actually i put the snake in and then set the hide down on top of them so that they know what it is there for. and as far as the water dish goes, most bloods like to soak a lot so dont worry. he will probably crawl (okay...slither) into the water dish when he begins to feel comfy with the surroundings.

thanks everyone...Looks like I freaked out too early because this morning he was already in both hides. Anyway I am running with a lot of temperature problems. I woke up and the ambients were 75. But after I turned the light on in the closet it jumped around 80. So I think I could solve this by going to get a red 75 watt buld. And using that 24/7 to keep the tmeps steady. Also winter is coming in 2 months. I live in PA. You think that will effect the temp alot? Even in the closet?
thanks
MIke

Why don't you try undertank heating with an attached thermostat... then it won't matter what the temperature is in the room, you'll always have the appropriate amount of heat for your snake.

Any reason the snake is in the closet? Just curious, I once kept a snake under my bed to hide it from my fellow college students... Closet college pets seem to be a recurrent theme.

Its in the closet because its easier to keep a good temp in there...for me anyway.....I do have a uth already and now that I got the night light bulb temps are good...thanks

Your temps aren't high enough with just the UTH??? Mine reaches well over 100 degrees with ONLY the UTH... thats why I need a thermostat.

Where are you measuring your temps, and what are you measuring them with?

hackbone Aug 25, 2005 09:33 PM

Maybe he has a small uth my temps never reach a 100 with mine maybe yours is to big

I don't think its the size that matters, its the brand, and where you measure the temperature. My snake burrows in the substrate, so I have a digital thermometer prove taped to the bottom of the cage. Perfect accurate monitoring of the temperature exactly where my snake is.

If you don't measure in the appropriate place or with a quality thermometer (the circle ones at petstores are usually off by 5 degrees or MORE) then you really don't know how hot your UTH is.
