Substrate question

BOASELECTER Aug 25, 2005 06:56 AM

Whats the substrate I keep seeing in photos on this forum - looks like a thin carpet?? Is it?

I have noticed it more in the Daytona picks but also in some from ppls personal pics...

Personally I just use newspaper but thaught this looked alot nicer - whatever it is is it easy to clean or do you just dispose of it??

Cheers

Sam

It's called repti-carpet and I love it. When you buy it, you get 2 pieces in the package, so that when one is soiled, you have a replacement ready.

I just pop mine in the washing machine with very little soap, and I run it through a second final rinse to be sure there is no soap residue that might irritate my snakes' skin.

If you buy some, it comes in standard aguarium sizes, but when you first use it, it'll be a little bit oversized. DON'T CUT IT DOWN. It'll shrink a little at the 1st washing and will be just right after that.

Many pet stores carry it, or you can order from someone like LLL or another big dealer.

Hope that helps.

I use the cage-carpet, and I always have to scrape it before I put it in the washer. I have never tried without doing it. Does it work? If you don't have to scrape it, that would make it much better. Derek

I have bought indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot.

Just cut it to fit. Its very absorbant. I have rinsed it off each time I've changed it with a hose outside. I've thought about washing it in the washing machine, but I'll only do it with no detergent.

This is one of my baby girls on it. You can't really tell though.

It has ridges which helps with shedding and seems to insulate the bottom of the containers and tanks well.

Ive used the outdoor carpet on display tanks as well and its
VERY hard to beat.
HD sells many different colors of outdoor carpet that really make display BCI look their finest. That tan color rocks IMO.
Cant beat the "value" either
Wont fade or shrink and its easy to clean.
Best thing is the cost per sq foot over reptile rugs.!!!
Just measure tank width plus 1/8" the length is 12'(ft) on the big roll. Cut your length plus 1/8" with a box blade(razor)
