I think my Beardie is dieing

mcnugent Aug 25, 2005 08:09 AM

All of the sudden my beardie started acting very very strange last night and today. He started running around his cage and jumping onto and off a bunch of stuff last night which he's never done. Then, today, when i started feeding him his crickets he was having spasms. His head would suddenly shake to the left side alot and one time he ate a cricket and had such a bad spasm he alsost flipped over. It's really strange it looks like he can hardly control what his body is deciding to do. It really sucks cuz i thought he was doing so well.

Does anyone know what this could be from or anything i could do to help ?

Could be a few different things...vitamin deficiency/or overdose....what are you supplemetning with? UVB? Sounds like an impaction though. Are the crickets you are feeding too large? A warm soak and a couple of drops of mineral oil orally may help. I would call a vet, ASAP, they'll be able to see the dragon and treat appropriately.

I dont have a clue what is going on he started acting so weird so fast. I kinda doubt its impaction, hes still going to the bathroom normally and i havent been feeding him very big crickets. He is really messed up tho, he wobbles around, and keeps trying to eat the carpet on the bottom of his cage for some reason. I dont think he can control his body well at all.

What to do ?

It could be a lot of things, like I said. He could've gotten a hold of something toxic, could be a vitamin overdose. I don't feel comfortable giving out this type of medical advice, as I am not a vet. If you haven't done so, please call a vet right away!!! You need to get him in ASAP. I hope he's ok.

We don't have any good reptile vets around where i so i really couldnt take him to the vet right away. I did a bunch of stuff tho like warm baths and just holding him alot and i dn what worked but he soon got better. He still every now and then will have a now very small spsm with his head but its nothing like it used to be and i think it too will soon go away. He was always perfectly normal in every other sense, but would have a few spasm when eating, now hes fine.

Well...glad he's feeling a little better. He really should still see a vet though. Where are you located? There should be a herp vet somewhere in your area. Even if you have to drive a few hours...it's worth it for his health and your peace of mind.
