Question about deworming and treating parasites...

crazyreptilelady Aug 25, 2005 08:48 AM

Please don't get upset but I just was thinking about this and wanted to run it past the people on the forums (most of the people here know more about leos so far than I). I have the male leo who is thin but still seemingly otherwise healthy. I have taken 2 fecals to a vet and he has been examined. Both fecals came back negative but seems like he has several signs of parasites/worms. He cycles through eating normally to not eating so much but never can keep any weight on. Come to find out this vet does a common fecal test but doesn't do the most thorough (not sure what all is involved). I have already spent a pretty penny at the vet and am loosing my job next week. Hopefully just tempararily. The only other option it seems is to start over at a different vet and have to pay an expensive vet exam fee and fecals again to make sure. Does anyone do general deworming and such with a med you can buy without a prescription? I don't know if this is risky or harmful but I am running out of ideas and options and trying to decide if another trip to the vet is instore. He still is lively and has ideal quaratine set-up. eats crickets sometimes and has a dish in there with mealies and waxowrms that he hasn't eaten from yet. Any other suggestions would be helpful. He has been like this for 3 months with very little improvement and has been in quarantine for 2 months. Thanks

You can buy parazap at almost any petstore and you don't need a perscribtion to buy it.

I check out the parazap website. Do people use this often? Is it really safe? Have people seen good results? Any stories or experiences would be helpful. Thanks

i've used parazap before. it saved one of my geckos and i would recomend using it. she was down to about 20 grams. and her stools were runny and gray. really bad smelling also. after a couple weeks of parazap she started eating like crazy and she is now over 50 grams.

Thank you BlueLeo for mentioning this ^^ (cat had tapeworms which he got while I was visiting my mom's house, which her animals got from my sister's new puppy. So gross) But this'll be good to get for my reptile (and cat) just in case. Have you used it as a preventative?

BlueLeo Aug 26, 2005 11:08 AM

nope, just when they had them.

If you just go with Parazap, you'll never really know for sure what was wrong with him. I think you owe it to your other animals to find out what you're dealing with so you'll know how much longer you need to quarantine for and whether or not a follow up fecal is necessary.

Parazap is misleading in that the advertisers want you to think it can treat for all the common reptile parasites, when it's only effective against some.

Check herpvetconnection.com for any other reptile vets in your area. Some vets will include a fecal test in with the cost of the visit. You also shouldn't have to pay much (if any at all) for medicine because leopard geckos are so small and only need a few drops of diluted medication.
