happy sight: proves ghost IS het albino

Rtdunham Aug 25, 2005 09:48 AM

I had a ghost possible het for albino male. To test it, i bred him x an albino possible het hypo female. Any resulting albino would prove he IS het.

The photos show the results (check on the link just below the photo to see the 2nd photo). I got 3 albinos out of 3 eggs. So he is a het albino, which confirms his value to my future breeding efforts. The albino babies, by the way, are albinos definite het hypo and anerythristic, so interesting in their own right. Two were tangerines, one a tricolor.

thanks shannon.

btw, the other test breeding we talked about at daytona, that i was waiting on -- to see if my albino possible hybino really IS a hybino, is also unfolding now and so far, so good. (for the sake of other readers, i'll share what i shared with shannon: i bred my male, which i held back two years ago because he was one of the "pale" albino babies with a chance of being hybino, X two hypo females; if all the babies are hypos it would be a strong indicator he IS hybino, while any non-hypo baby would prove he's not). So far, six or eight babies have hatched from the two clutches and so far all are hypos. Not proof yet, but hints at good news. And at least it shows he IS at least het/hypo. Plus these hypos are all hypos het/albino, great animals for producing definite hybinos when bred x each other.

Terry,

First off, congratulations on proving that your ghost is in fact definite het for albino.

The albino babies that hatched, you mentioned that they are definitely het hypo and anerythristic. I think they could also be hybinos. Since the albinos and hybinos are very similar in appearance, I think the 3 hatchlings are either albinos definite hypo and anerythristic OR actually hybinos (50-50 chance of either genotype).

Homozygous hypo, Homozygous anery, Het. albino

BRED WITH Het. hypo, Homozygous albino

Outcomes:

25% Het. hypo, Het. anery, Het. albino,
25% Het. hypo, Het. anery, Homozygous albino
25% Homozygous hypo, Het. anery, Het. albino
25% Homozygous hypo, Het. anery, Homozygous albino

Are the numbers correct above regarding the babies, Terry? Either way, that's really awesome.

Thanks for sharing.

you're right. i should have said that. thanks.

>> ... I think the 3 hatchlings are either albinos definite (I think you meant to say "het" here) hypo and (het) anerythristic OR actually hybinos (50-50 chance of either genotype).

actually you're partly right. what you overlook below is that the female is albino POSSIBLE het hypo...so she might be, but might not be. She's a 50% chance het hypo.

If she is, yes, any of the babies could actually be a hybino (more specifically, hybino het anery). But i think the odds are a little lower than you specify--since "mom" has 50% chance of being het hypo, and if she IS, then 1/2 of the resulting albinos would be hybinos, there's probably more of a 1/4 chance overall. It would have been nice to get one or two albinos and then one hypo, to prove the female was het hypo, but hey, with the babies i got, i'm not complaining! And proving hte male was more important to me than establishing the female's full genotype.

thanks for pointing out they could be hybinos.

peace

I also sent you a separate email regarding a separate subject matter.

Thanks,

Hi Terry,

you posted: "actually you're partly right. what you overlook below is that the female is albino POSSIBLE het hypo...so she might be, but might not be. She's a 50% chance het hypo".

Yeah, my assumption was she was definite het for hypo since I think you did not specify "possibly" in your first posting...maybe I overlooked it or did not see "possibly"... but either way, more than 1/4 chance of them being hybino babies are great odds to me !!!!

Thanks,

Terry,
First off it was great to meet you in Daytona and see your fine quality animals. Well done on this clutch. The double homo hets or pos hets are truly hard to find. I would guess that the ghost het came from a triple het pairing? They seem to yield so much and are great to see what hatches from them. Rodney had that clutch hatch out as well and I was thinking of his anerys het hypo and amel would be great paired up with your new amels het hypo and anery. Now that would be a fun pairing.
Again well done and enjoy.
Adam

Very nice Terry,

Double homo hets and Homo Double hets will be most rewarding when bred together, great start to those project with these hatchlings...

Send me a few up north would you
