Q about medications...

platinumtlc Aug 25, 2005 12:51 PM

The vet pescribed Panacur and Metadezonol to my vet to take for 5 days straight, then wait another 2 weeks, then do another 5 days. I was done with the first 5 days on Sat, why such a big break between the doses?

And should I give my collared this - Acidophiliz i read about it on the bearded board, its supposed to replace the good bacteria that panacur kills off and also increase appetite.
My collared still has wet stool and almost every morning his bottom is covered in it and i have to wash it off its sad.

, It's always a good thing to replace the good bacteria, and yeah they always advise that on the beardie forum, when anyone is treating their dragon with meds.

Thats weird how your vet said to give panacur every day for 5 days then wait for 2 weeks and do it again for 5 days.

Most will tell you, and this is what I do, I give one dose of panacur (ONE day) and wait 2 weeks and give ONE more dose. Never gave it everyday. They were the directions I use for Parazap, NOT panacur.

As far as the really loose bowels that it is all over him, thats pretty severe if ya ask me. Was he checked for coccidia? Does his loose bowels have a very strong odor?

The stool that was checked last week was about a week old when I gave it to him, and it tested negative. Maybe it was too old? And yeah it smells.

So should I continue to wait the 2 weeks or do something else?
And should I buy that thing to replace the good bacteria?

It's odd because one day he's active and wahtever, then hes back to his old sick self one day, its like he can't make up his mind if hes getting better or not.

and get all your answers cleared up. Yopu should not be driving yourself nuts wondering what to give him, what not to, If he has parasites...... You paid your vet for that experience and his so called knowlegde in my opinion.

Its a shame your collared has runny bowels (STILL) thats quite taxing on any animal or person.

I think due to the symptoms your talking about lethargic, runny stools and bad smell, sounds like coccidia. And if he is treating him for parasites (which he really has no idea of what kind since the stool was negative, and thats strange ) than yes get the probiotic/ for good bacteria .

He should due a fecal for you again !

Panacur is a good "general" de wormer" It takes care of most sub species of round worms (nematodes) and a variety of others including many strongyloides etc. The reason for the break time in medicating is because the life cycle (gestation period) of many of the parasite eggs can vary. Some take two and three weeks to hatch. For example, most nematode eggs take around 21-23 days to cycle so giving the panacur for the whole time between the parasite egg hatchings is not necessary. Once every 10 to 14 days is adequate for a two dose period. The fact that the vet had you give it for five consecutive days then wait two weeks which I agree with Eve is a bit unorthodox but they may have given you a weaker dose and that's why the five days on then two weeks off then the final 5 days on. Makes sense when you think about it It could be they didn't want to shock it's system with two single full dosages? I usually dose one time with the full measured dose then one more time in 10 to 14 days. For stubborn cased, I sometimes dose a third and last time in another 10 to 14 days.

The next time you take a fecal sample you need to take a fresher one. A week old sample will likely show negative as far as parasites. If you can't take one in for a day or two then keep it in a small container in the fridge. You might also put a small piece of damp paper towel in with it to help keep it fresh.

Be sure the lizard in question has access to water as the de wormers are very dehydrating.

Hope this answers a couple of your questions,

John

My collared is also breathing and sometimes opens his mouth to breathe and picks his head up. THe vet said he doesn't think it is uri, but has to do with the calcium deficiency. Is that possible? I am trying to get a fresh sample of stool to bring and do a new check but his breathing is also scaring me.
