question about vitalites

iceyesnteeth Aug 25, 2005 03:35 PM

i posted wondering about the best lighting the show off blue chondros.i was sent a link to the vitalite page.now the compact florecents(screw in kind)look ok for my setup but i was wondering if i can have them exposed inside of my setup?has anyone used these?rather than have them filter through the glass roof of the enclosure,im thinking about putting it right inside.now if my snake makes contact with it or even perches on it,will it get hot enough to burn him?i dont have a screen top(its glass)and if i put it outside,it will have to filter through the glass and im afraid it wont be as effective.thanks in advance

Hey Icey. I'm sure that light will work just as well as a tube for viewing colors.

Aren't those the corkscrew shaped bulbs? Just a word of caution: I would make sure your snake cannot fit through the openings of that bulb if you put it inside the cage with no protection around it. I'm not sure about the level of heat on those bulbs, but i would be worried about the snake getting stuck, and maybe hanging itself. I don't want to sound ominent, but I actually heard of a snake that hung and killed itself when it got lodged between a fluorescent bulb and the fixture(that had no cover on it).

Maybe you could build a cage to go around the bulb using hardware cloth or porch screen material.

Just some thoughts.

Hope it helps,
Kevin

Why can't you get the tube type and put it in a hood like you use for fish tanks and just lay it on top? I have a setup like that and I plan to use it to light my new viv when I get it.

because i built my own glass cage.its basically a glass cube with sliding glass doors and a fixed glass top.i didnt have special lighting in mind when i built it because chondros dont need it.then my sorong began developing tons of blue and now i want it.id rather not have it filter through the glass so if i could install it inside the cage, that would work best,
