Bought a "horned toad lizzard" Need Help

kyleslizzards Aug 25, 2005 03:40 PM

If someone could please help, we just bought one and we were told it's like a bearded dragon except it only eats crickets and this other reptile food that I have can't think of the name right now. Well, I am home and this seems to be inaccurate, can someone please email me so that I can ask you the 100's of questions I have in my head now. Thanks!

This is my best and most caring response, please take this horned lizard back to the pet shop where you purchased it, you are not ready to keep a horned lizard. Ask to exchange it for a bearded dragon or a gecko. Please go to wwww.phrynosoma.com
and read all you can about horned lizards and their care and the committment it takes to care for these, and consider your doing yourself a favor right out the door. These lizards are not for novices and the best thing you can do is get your money back or excahnge the horned lizard. Please send me an e-mail to my personal e-mail back and I would like to know what pet shop sold you this lizard. Thanks and cheers!!!

Very well said. I agree 1,000,000,000 times over. These are DIFFICULT creatures to keep and will likely die on you. Get one you can actually keep alive and enjoy!!!

Sorry Reptoman, but I might beg to disagree on this one a little bit. Obviously the pet shop has no concern or care for these HLs. If Kyle is willing to learn they might stand a far better chance with him than with a petshop that can't get their information straight.

Tell us more about your situation if you will. What type are they?
Can you post some photos?
Cheers!

While I thought about the answer before I give it, certianly it's a hard call, but when do these shops be held for their own greed in selling animals and giving out the wrong information, the individual has every right to buy a horned lizard legally captured and sold by a pet shop, but he was obviously given the wrong info, and my thought was that if you get bad food and never say a thing about it, the restraunt continues to serve bad food. I think it's a shame that this goes on, I can go either way with this, so we are not going to contend on this one for sure--but that is also why I asked him to give me the name of the pet shop, as I was going to personally contact them- not to chew them out but hopefully have some kinfd of discussion with them about this. I am not the law nor am I trying to stand in the way of someones right to purchase a horned lizard, but somehow and at sometime these pet shops need to have some of this addressed, this is no reflection on the person who purchased it.......thats where I was coming from and I am still ocmfortable with this in my mind.....Cheers!!!

You are abosolutely right in that they do need to be held accountable and also educated on the proper care. I am all for putting pressure on the shops to, at a minimum, provide proper husbandry info so that their customers can make an informed decision and be good custodians of their new charges.
Education is the key as you have said.

We have decided to keep the DHL due to the fact, we ARE capable of caring for it, it was just a matter of finding out the correct information. I have read alot these past few days in hopes of being able to care for him more than what the petshops did/do. Let's face it, many petshop aren't in the business to "care" for an animal, they are in the business to sell and make profit. While he continued to live there, all he was going to eat was his crickets which they told me he ate 4 a day. He has eaten many more since he's been here. I have already placed an order for harvester ants and can't wait till he can enjoy what he really needs. When I called the petstore back I read to them the original response from reptoman and they were speechless. Do I think they care? No, but I brought it to their attention.I actually had intentions of printing information off of the website so that they can better care/serve their customers and animals, but I wouldn't count on it. He was living in a cage with a bearded dragon, and a dessert iguana. While I do agree education is the key, this lizzard is in the hands of a caring individual not someone who is having a "cool pet" moment, and he will continue to get the care he needs. We all have to start somewhere. When we first start out with something we are not experts and it's through our expierences from which we learn. That's what we are doing. I welcome anyone's suggestions to help him benefit from the best.

Kyle-you said it all!!!
You must knbow that when you see apost committment is the most imprtant thing, and a caring individual, sounds like you rescued that horned lizard from a worse situation especially in with two other lizards. Education is the key issue but also it would even be better if the shops took a little more responsibility when dealing with their animals. Welcome aboard!!!
