John Lassiters brought up a great way to scale count in a post down below

He mentions using a perfect, freshly shed skin. Very good thinking bro! So Eastern and Goini guys, please remember to check those shed skins next time. Thanks Tom Stevens

...to do a scale count on a squirming snake?????
Jeeze Louise!
It makes me nervous thinking about it...
Using a skin seems to be the most sensible way--at least for me..ha!

Fresh sheds are a good way and much more pleasant than DOR's. With patience it can be done on live snakes fairly fast too. On a large series of Ky locale corns my field partner Will Bird and I were counting ventrals, subcaudals, mid body scale rows, blotch counts, TL measurements and sexing in maybe 10 minutes or less per snake. In time we got a system down and were able to move through fairly fast. Phil
