controlling fruit flies...

Misskiwi67 Aug 25, 2005 09:15 PM

First pinhead crickets, now fruit flies... is there anything else that will be invading my gecko tank??? LOL

Is there anyway to control the fruit fly population? They're everywhere now, and I'm getting sick of them...

you gotta be careful with those. they come in from crickets and will feed on poop, dead crix, and pretty much will linger as long as theres moisture.

only way i know of to get rid of them is to clean out each one of your tanks completely, and restart everything.

overtime you will learn to find the happy medium between over spraying, over feeding, and fly growth. It took me a few months to get to that point. we've all gone through it. just another one of the steps to go up with this genus.

I think I've got the over-spraying thing figured out, and that was definately a problem. Now I spray less, but more often, and the substrate is slowly drying out without lowering the humidity.

What do you mean by overfeeding? Considering I feed her as much as she'll eat, this could very well be the problem. I put in 6-10 crickets, and when I can only find 1-2, I add more. She goes through about 2-3 dozen crickets a week. What is your feeding regimen, and what can I do to improve mine?

When I say over feeding...

you look at the bottom of the cage and there are dead crickets on the substrate. make sense? that normally only occurs when people throw in too many at a time.

I remember the days when I only bought 2-3 dozen crickets at a time. now its 2-3 thousand at a time.

Ok, then I'm overfeeding... I'm usually pretty good at picking them up, but I'm probably missing some somewhere because they hide in the wood and such.

And as far as crickets go, I'm hoping to be done with them soon. I've already got 2 cultures of roaches growing. Hopefully I won't have to ever buy crickets again in a few months. I hate buying 3-4 dozen large crickets and having 1/3 of them die in a week.

Thanks for the help!!

try buying the half grown and grow them up yourself, you can get good results gut loading them yourself and they live longer.
