Kudzu as feed?

chucks4me Aug 25, 2005 09:36 PM

Has anyone here ever used Kudzu (mile a minute vine) for their sulcatas (and leapards)? I have been exploring this option since I learned that in the southern states many people use it to feed livestock. I would like to hear about anyone's experience with Kudzu as tortoise feed. Thanks!

I'd never heard of it but I did a search & found this:
http://www.cptr.ua.edu/kudzu/

Sounds like it got way out of control lol.
I looked around some tortoise feeding sites, didn't see anything about it, my guess is as part of a variety of foods it'd be ok for them to have it.
Not every single weed I have growing in my yard is listed on the tortoise feeding guides either but as long as they aren't listed in the poisonous plant field guide, I let her have them.

I live in Charleston SC and have been feeding my two years old sulcatas kudzu for about 2 months. It grows everywhere here and is free. I read somewhere that Kudzu has all of the nutrients that sulcatas need, so I tried it and they seem to like it!, all of their systems seem to be functioning well and they seem to like it. Since it is a very thin leaf they do seem to need alot of it though. And may I suggest that you harvest it somewhere else and just bring home what you want to feed your tortoises, because it grows so fast, and can take over your home and yard before you know it!
