Help Incubating eggs Help Please!!!!!!!!

NewDimReps Aug 25, 2005 10:35 PM

I having a bad ratio of hatch to lay. Im sure my problem is in incubation. If I could get some help with temps(What is to high). Water to Perlite ratio? How often do you add more water?
Also humidity for the eggs. What kind of container do you put air holes in container?

Thanks a million,
Mike Tucker

first of all i want to emphasize breeder female weight and diet. if your female isn't above 30 grams (preferably 35 or more) and is not on a well balanced diet, you will likely have a poor hatch rate as it is.
second, incubation as i do it.
i keep my incubator at 74 degrees. ( i've had it jump up to 93 for 8 hours and all but one egg has hatched from the temp spike)
at 74 degrees my eggs always hatch between 69-72 days.
i use rubbermaid take-a-longs sandwich containers with no holes poked in it.
i use 1:1 ratio of vermiculite to water by weight. make is something easy like 100 grams verm:100grams water
find out the weight of the container and add it in to the total. every 1-2 weeks weigh the container without the eggs in it and if it drops in weight you need to add the difference in water.
be sure to air on the container(s) 1-2 times a week

Thanks my females are all over 35 grams so I think my incubator is getting to warm.

what exactly is happening with your eggs? are they collapsing? are they getting moldy?

personally, i don't use an incubator. crested eggs can be 'incubated' at room temp. i keep mine in a shoe box, 2:1 ratio of perlite to water. i keep the shoebox on the bottom shelf of my rack, out of direct light and things seem to go fine for me.
