I need breeder advice

LadyOhh Aug 25, 2005 10:37 PM

Hey guys, so I am new to the game, have done my homework and now want to get into the serious nitty gritty of breeding. I have, before even considering breeding, three normal females. Now, my question is, and feel free to give me your opinion on this, what type of male should I get that will help produce awesome morphs BUT!!! for a reasonable initial investment price. I would love to have a Pewter pastel or something like that, but as luck would have it, I do not have the initial funds for such an outrageous purchase as of yet.

I await all of your wisdom.

Hey,

It all depends upon how much you have to invest, what you like, what you plan to do with the babies, etc. Pastels are AWESOME! And affordable, too! And will always be needed for other morphs. Keep in mind, the less expensive the morph, the easier it is to sell, and you may not sell all your babies (if that's even your goal).

Remember, if the sky falls out on the market tomorrow, you have to be happy with what you have at home. Always go with QUALITY animals, you can tell by pics usually but talk to a breeder.

Best of luck and have fun doing this!

Steve ,

My first coversation with the breeder I bought my original Spider from lasted 5 hours . I had made my mind to purchase from them already though .I love These Animals(Spiders) if you haven't noticed , and every Animal I've produced looks up at me , and blinks when I open their tubs , I'm I a proud dad or what ? Enjoy the ride

I've heard a lot about Pastels, and Spiders... Is there anything else out there that is a dominant morph that is worth looking into?

Since you already have 3 "normal" females that are up to breeding size a quick return with a small investment would be a pastel. Yes, the market has come way down but it's not likely to come down too much more. Males are being posted as low as $550 shipped. Buy the male, and feed him heavy until January or later before you start your cycling. A late start will mean eggs slightly later in the year. that's ok, check this forum and the classifieds, there are breeders that are still producing clutches. Out of the three clutches, you keep maybe just one male, a couple of females, and use the rest for trading up or selling. You could have your spider or yellowbelly or ??? in one year. I think males will bottom out at about $500, females at about $800-$1000. There will always be a demand for female pastels. You can do so much with them.

While doms and co-doms are ok, you should consider a het. Most people think pastels will not go lower in price, but the reality is in not too many years, because they are co-dom, the will cost just a shy more than a normal. The market is already flooded with them, and next year when the breeders still have a bunch of this years and last years babies the market will just drop huge again. I am willing to bet in 2 to 3 years (the time it takes to grow up a female) pastels will be worth under $250. While recesives will still be worth pleanty. You can pick up a het for pennies on the dollar right now because all the other breeders are trying to finance their next project and the buying craze has slowed down after daytona.

Hmmm, thats what I think. Co-Doms are cool, but not a good INVESTMENT unless its brand new.

If your budget allows - go for the mojave - yes the price will be dropping - same with spiders, pastels and everything else co-dom - but mojaves are on my list for next year! Cinnamon pastels are nice too but a bit more expensive or if you have the money - a pinner but I think your best bet would be mojaves.
