Will
is he a skink eater?
Coolhl7,
Thanks for the compliment. He just hatched out last Thursday along with 2 others. I have not attempted feeding yet. I am going to try my hardest to get all 3 of them started on pinky parts/mouse tails. However, if they are reluctant eaters I will try scenting. If that doesn't work, I will feed them ground skinks as a last resort. But like I said ... I want to get them started on pinkies as opposed to worrying about collecting enough skinks, lol.

I have tried that with dozens of CBB scarlet kings out of the egg...none would consistantly take unscented or even scented pink parts, but all would chow down on ground skinks....here is one of my success stories...after 8 months he eats unscented pinks out of my hand....good luck with your reds...they are outrageously beautiful...keep us posted on their progress.
Those are really neat snakes. Congrats on getting that gravid female. You can really see the amaura or elapsoides infleuence in them. What are the venters like on them? Are any of them checkered?
Jim
Jim,
Very interesting comment! We have debated for the longest time about the influence of amaura on these Red Milks from the Delta of MS. According to range maps, LA Milks don't exist on this side of the MS River. But there seems to be some influence of them in our Red Milks IMHO. The belly is indeed checkered/mottled. Another reason I think there may be some amaura influence is the fact that the Red Milks from the Delta are much smaller compared to ones from other regions. A lot to think about! I've talked to a lot of people that do research in the Delta, and they as well have speculated about the amaura influence.

Hi Will,
I am basing my comments on the lack of laterat blotches and that the blotches come all the way down to the ventral area. The snakes around here (Baton Rouge)and South of here are considered to be 2 and 3 way integrades amaura/elapsoides/sypsila, except for pure elapsoides just NNE of here and eastward into MS. I caught a pair of of elapsoides on my favorite cornsnake road on a very hilly cutover spot (mixed pines and hardwoods)this Spring on dry nights and missed another. I have seen snakes marked almost the same as yours from along the river NW and S of here, but not quite as intense a red. Most have black w/mottled white heads, but a fair number have varying degrees of red on the head and all kinds of venters from solid black to banded to mottled to solid white. I'm sure it is the influence of the river, rafting animals down on driftwood. I had a friend who worked on the dock near New Orleans back in the 70s who found a pure looking red milk in the bottom of a barge, along with a garter snake. Triangulum is sure interesting in all of its pure and integrade forms. Hope those get past the skink stage o.k. for you.
take Care,
Jim
