One of the eggs Hatched! Anything special I have to do?

Lightning_Hunter Aug 25, 2005 11:54 PM

When I got home from work today, I found a baby Alligator Lizard running around the container! Should I take care of it the same way as an adult, but just feed it pinhead crickets instead? Should the basking spot be 80-90 with a cage temperature of around 75 just like the adults? Should I mist the cage a lot more than I would for adults? Will they drink out of a water dish? Anything else I should be worried about and/or change in the cage? Right now the cage is setup the same as when the mother was in it. Sorry for all the questions, but I've never had babies this young before!

I moved the baby to the same cage that I had the adult in, but I'm thinking about moving the baby to a smaller cage with the eco-earth substrate. The other eggs should be hatching soon!

You can treat the babies pretty much like the adults. Extra misting does help since they can be kind of slow learners in terms of finding the water dish and it helps with shedding. Just make sure the cage isn't constantly wet. I house babies in smaller enclosures than adults primarily to make feeding easier.

Congrats of the baby!

Thanks for the quick response!

I guess I'll turn the heat lamp on in the morning along with the UV light. They do have hiding spots after all, so they can hide in the dark if they don't want to be seen in the light yet. Right now, I have half of a smaller cage full with moist Eco-Earth bedding, and the other half full with ESU Jungle Mix. I figure that if they don't like the moist Eco-Earth, they can move to the other side of the cage where the heat lamp and dry Jungle Mix is. Do the babies start basking under the heat lamp pretty quickly?

Another baby just hatched, and I recorded the entire thing. I'll compress the video as best I can and upload it somewhere for everyone to see. I'll get many pictures of them hatching as well! I'll make a post sometime in the next week with lots of pictures and possibly a link to that video.
