Amel/corn coughing up blood

TSparks Aug 26, 2005 01:32 AM

A friend of mine recently bought an Amel corn snake at the All Ohio rep show. It's about 3.5ft long so Im guessing its full grown. It's cage temps are in the mid 80's.It has a hide as well as a water dish(bottled water not tap) and is on newspaper. This is the second time it has done it in a week. The first time was Saturday we thought it might of been a prey issue(large mouse)that didnt agree with it.It was fed on the Thursday before. It did it again today. It has been a week since it's last feeding. It has been active and alert the entire time she has had it.She said it shed about 4 days ago.Could it be related to it shedding?Thats what I am guessing. Is it blood or digestive juices or a combination of both? Thanks for any help

I'm no expert, but that sounds pretty serious to me. I'd take the snake to a qualified reptile vet as soon as possible. I really don't think it would be related to the shed. I kind of doubt that it's simply a bad prey item, based on the timing of the incidents with respect to the feeding, but like I said, I'm no expert.

Coughing up blood shouldn't have anything to do with shedding and if it were a problem with the prey item you'd more than likely have a complete regurgitation of the entire prey item, not just some coughed up blood. As mentioned earlier, it should be brought to a qualified herp vet to be checked out.

Hi, caught sight of your query whilst I was looking for other stuff and felt I had to chip in! You didn't say whether your friend had other snakes or not, if they do, or if you have snakes yourself you need to employ a strict barrier technique. We had something similar in our collection, with the snakes regurgitating necrotic lumps of gut lining in addition to the frothy blood: the vet still hasn't been able to identify what the cause is but we have lost a kingsnake, yellow rats, a bairds rat and most of our corns to it. Barrier techniques are really difficult for us to enforce as we are a teaching facility and it took a hold before we knew what was going on. A possible link with the prey items was made as we grow our own, since then all prey is frozen for at least 48hrs after euthanasia. All we could do was provide supportive care for the affected animals, but it doesn't look good: sorry

This is the only snake that she has.It is kept at her place. She noticed a very small amount today after it had drank some water. She taking it to the vet as soon as she can get an app.
