EGG question/help

One of my eastern laid eggs a few days ago. Why would it lay them this time of year? I live in NJ and it will be cold soon.

A lot of turtles & tortioses lay more than one clutch per season.
Sometimes it happens in the fall & that's just the way it is.

Yes, they do sometimes lay 2 clutches a year. But being that it is so late - I would take them into the house and incubate them. When they are laid so late just before it gets cold, It's tough on the little guys. Good luck.

Box turtles often lay two clutches. The late clutches may hatch but the babies usually will not come out of the nest until the spring.. they will remain under the dirt and hibernate in the nest living off the egg yolk reserves.
