cycling question.

iceyesnteeth Aug 26, 2005 11:56 AM

now i have read that when getting your snakes ready to breed, they must be cycled by dropping the nightime temps by around 10 degrees after a period of stable normal temps.now my normal temps are around 85 during the day and 78-75 and night(temps vary a few degrees in cage depending how far away from heat source.now if i were to drop the nightime temps by 10 degrees,my cage would be 65 at night.provided i turn off all heating, the coldest the cage would be is my room temperature, which is usually 75.how is this problem handled? am i to run an airconditioner at night in the winter??also,i read that the nightime temps should drop 10 degrees when cycling but what about daytime temps?do they stay the same?2 of my snakes are ready to breed and id like to begin cycling.if the coldest my house gets is 75,can i raise the daytime temp to 90 and nightime temps to 85,then drop it to room temp of 75 when cycling begins?id love some feedback on what some of you breeders do.

Drop the night temps 1 degree each evening until you hit about 70 - 68 (i would not go below 68). I keep a daytime high at 85 hot end.

I keep them there for about 2 months (you'll know when they are ready for eachother) then introduce them.

Keep them cooling (together) until you see ovulation or the pairing is a bust.

good luck!

hey julian, thanks for the advise.listen, what size enclusre is a good size to keep the pair intoduced in?the reason im asking is because im keeping them seperate in kinda small enclosures.not too small for a single snake(2.5 x3.25 i guess)but i imagine it would be too small to breed a pair in.so what do you do?

I successfully bred and produced a nice clutch in a sterlite tub that measured 23"L x 16"W x 17"T. The female I had tried on several occasions to set the female up in one of my adult breeder cages, but she wouldn't have it. My breeder cages measure 20" cube. Cage size is a matter of opinion.......in my opinion. Use what works best for you and more importantly, your chondros.

A fellow chondro keeper said to me -

"Julian, i could breed these things in a 20 gallon bucket and a light bulb if i needed to."

He's right.
