Talked to vet over phone today.. not in a good mood at all.

platinumtlc Aug 26, 2005 12:40 PM

I talked to my vet over the phone today and I told him how I have talked to other people who own collareds and had the same symptoms that pointed to upper respitory and he kept saying "no this is not infectious, this has to do with the metabolic bone deficiency", "I see no reason why we should put him on baytril". He said he couldn't do a fecal straight from him, he needed me to bring in another sample. I said I am really worried because he is not getting any better, and he was like "well we do what we can" he was talkign to me like it was hopeless and hes not going to get better. I was like, "ok fine" and he hung up.

All I can do is call another vet, but I am running out of vets fast and its getting so upsetting.

Alright well I have hit like every vet here and the first one I called said none of the vets are specifically working with the reptiles btu they all look at them, which I'm guessing is not good because I need a specialist. Then another one I called she said I couldn't talk to the vet directly because he is not allowed to give out any advice unless I bring in the reptile itself. But she said he has worked with all reptiles and all different kind of cases and he helps out at a Zoo nearby for the exotics. He is the exotic specialist at that animal hospital. This is a link to him here - http://www.oradell.com/visdoc.cfm?refnum=31
I just find it irritating I am not allowed to ask the vet over the phone questions even about his experience or anything, I have to come in and pay when I am not 100% sure if he is right for the job. She says a lot of vets reccomend him for reptiles and exotics.

So that is my only option right now is to wait til monday to bring him in unless I can find another vet.

i am not sure what your schedule is like but i would just go camp out at his office and see if there is a cancellation or if they can fit you in because this is a quasi emergency, the little guy needs some help. if you go to this new vet and they find out he really does have a respiratory infection, i would fax all the info from the new vet to the old one and tell him to do some reading on the matter or not to take reptiles anymore.

Depending on your schedule and this is an emergency involving a family pet I would take your collared to the Zoo. Perhaps they can do something these apparent "Vets" can do.

Another suggestion would be to do a reptile vet search on the internet in your area.

I really dislike when a professional is worried about his rep when a pet's life is a stake.

All I can hope is that someone can get over their ego's and help you and your buddy out.

Good luck

or regional herp society. Many have websites that list vets used by memebers. I know the Toledo and Michigan herp societies both do. You might be lucky and find one with Saturday hours if you are willing to drive.

I had to taek my tort and chuckwalla 45 miles to the nearest herp vet, but I was sure glad I did. She was great and knew what she was talking about. She also reviewed husbandry with me and gave me a 2 pocket folder filled with care sheets and FAQ about each species I brought in.
