How many years of mentorship.....

goini04 Aug 26, 2005 01:47 PM

did most of your guys undergo before attempting to keep and maintain your first hot? I am just curious on how long it took the professionals in here to mentor under someone before they felt confident that they had what it takes to be a proper handler?

Just curious...

Thanks,

Chris

I started keeping venomous before nonvenomous so its hard to say. As far as mentoring, I would say 10 years of "professional mentoring" at various facilities coupled with 32 years of banging the bushes. Getting my VRL for Florida was probably the most "official" thing done in this decade.

4 years for my 1st Hot.
5 years for my 1st venomoid.

Why did it take you one year longer for a mentorship for a venomoid?

15 years keeping non venomous (lots of ratsnakes). 5 years direct in a controlled enviroment, I have been in the field now for some 20 years. Good question, shows you are thinking in the right direction.

When I first got into it there were no mentors. I kept non v for three years. I got my first Hot (a baby Pope's Viper) right after I joined a herp society and got my license(there were no restrictions to get one like today).

So I learned as I went. Fortunately I had good teachers in the society. That kept me from getting too wild too fast.
