Funny Story

OC-Balls Aug 26, 2005 05:42 PM

My wife tolerates my love for reptiles, and my modest collection. She however, isn’t to keen on the feeding of rodents (she doesn’t want to see them live or frozen).

I only have 5 BPs at the moment, but between them and the lizards, I’m spending a lot more than I want to on rats. I’ve mentioned raising them myself to my wife, but she really didn’t like the idea.

Today (with no motive behind my actions), I called my wife at home and informed her that one of the snakes didn’t eat last night (small live rat) and I had to put it in a cage for later. I asked her if she could get past the ick factor, and give the little guy some food and water.

Well she called me back 15mins later, and told me that this cute little guy is no longer snake food, and that we need to go find him a girlfriend.

I think I just found my rat breeder – funny how things work out!
Thanks for reading,
Ken

I take care of all the snakes, rats and mice and everytime Diana sees a cute rat it automatically becomes a breeder. She purchased some feeders from someone long before we started breeding our own rats and named him Lightfoot (he never got fed). We still have breeders that are relatives of him to this day and that was about 4 years ago.

I am like that too though, every time I get a cute feeder rat, its no longer food! I'm terrible, but right now I have one baby rat that is all white with black around his ears, sooo cute! I don't know if I can feed that one.

Our rodent colony is going to be overrun with Dumbo Rats & powder-blue mice if we're not careful, since neither of us can bear to feed them off. I think we're up to "pet mouse" and "cute rat" number eleventy-million and one!

LOL - that is funny!

Here is my similar story - My husband - same way - tolerates (and finances) our family addiction to our snakes - doesn't want to have anything to do with the feeding tho. He is willing however to do the occasional Petco run for mice or rats if my freezer or breeding stock doesn't have what I need. A couple of months ago - he brought home this gorgeous little blue rat - completely oblivious to that fact that such a gorgeous creature is not food!

Be careful - you may end up with more rats than your wife will let you feed off (or god forbid you unknowingly feed off one she grows attached too).

Here is Blueberry - she's much bigger now and queen of the rat barn!

becareful, i have snakes and pet rats, i have been keeping rats for years, since i was 19, i am 36 now, rats will bond to a human like a dog, i have 2 females here whom i raised that will jump out of the cage to ride my shoulder.
the reason i say becareful, is if shes hoping to raise rats because she thinks they are cute...... she might not let you use the offspring for food...........i have one breeder female whom i use for prey, the other females dont breed, they have two males in the cage with them but they have been neutered.....the reason i let this particular female breed for prey is she will bite, and so far wont tolerate any other rats but the male she is in the cage with, wont even tolerate me sticking my hand in the cage......so when it is time to pull babies i give a "treat" to get her from the nest then i remove a few babies.
i have one other female i have let breed twice, she seemed happy to let me have the babies both times....... then one of my whites (shoulder riders) killed a male when he tried to mate her, she doesnt seemed bothered bye a neutered male.

I haven't really tried to get the rodent breeding thing going yet, but I can somewhat relate. When I met my wife, I had an adult bearded dragon that when she first saw it, wouldn't get within 10 ft of it. Since then she's had me get her a chameleon, bearded dragon, 2 ball pythons, 3 creamsicle corns (on the way), 3 bubblegum rat snakes (on the way), and is begging me for a green GTP and a pied ball!

I got a Girl name Peg. When she was at the pup stage she got her tail and left foot chewed off. When I was going thru my colony looking for feeders I noticed her and put her to the side in her own cage. I feel bad for the disabled ones. My dream is to find a 3 legged cross eyed dog( seriously I'm not kidding).
I have a soft spot for disabled animals. Peg is probaly my favorite rat I have keep to date.

My favorite rat was blind! I bought him as a baby as food, none of the snakes would eat him, he ended up getting too big to feed. I noticed one day that he would tilt his head to one side to look at you, and then eventually couldn't see at all. He was the sweetest rat ever. He just died a few weeks ago, broke my heart. RIP Tanner

Watch out! If the one rat is too cute to feed~ in a few months 20 rats (and all their very cute pups) will be too cute to feed!! I know~ I enjoy breeding for color~ I have to hide the "really cute" feeders when I don't need new breeders or she will have a fit when I feed them (hubby could care less~ cute or not~ it's a rat and he will not have anything to do with it or the snake that eats it!)

IF you decide to breed for color though~ and your in Orange County~ drop me a note. I've got Dumbos, blues, cremes, seal points~ I got some REALLY cute food!

oooops~ I suppose I should have mentioned my Sister lives with my family~ she is the one that falls in love with the rats. And names as many as she can get away with~ because she knows I won't kill anything with a name!
