Blood breeding data for a retic guy

reticulus Aug 26, 2005 06:22 PM

When it comes to retics Ive got a good idea of what Im doing.

However, I havent bread malaysian bloods before. What are the minimum weights and ages for both animals. My male T is an 04 and was recently weighed at 1250g and 2.5ft. The female het is an 03 weighing 12lbs at 3.5ft in length.

The female has recently begun refusing meals although the male isnt showing any sperm plugs as of yet. Mature retics dont always show plugs, do bloods?

Thanks in advance

Males should be atleast 2 years of age and females 3. No specific weights because you can have a really fat blood that isn't necissarily mature. I would say around 8 lbs for a male and 10 for a female. Overweight bloods aren't as fertile anyways. They should be thick and robust but not fat. As far as I know males will usually show sperm plugs when they are mature... but I could be wrong. I know I can see them on my mature males though. Hope that helps, if you have any more questions let us know.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Jordan. I've seen plenty of bloods that were obese to the extent of being unable to safley reproduce and I belive that I've maintained her appropriately. I'll post pictures with a size reference soon. If she is willing to continue feeding through breeding season should I suspend feeding attempts until spring in an effort to avoid obesity?

Thanks for your time,

If she is just an 03 I would keep her on a steady diet and get her ready for NEXT season. Jamming alot of food down her throat will only make her want more when you take her off feed. Bloods can get very cranky when they are hungry and if she is hungry for a number of months.. not good. The only reason I would take off feed is for cycling them for breeding season. Or if you need to cut down on an overweight animal thats fine too, just monitor them to make sure they are messing up their face to go look for food.
