Typical New Tegu Owner Questions

kick_baal Jul 17, 2003 08:59 PM

Hi all,

I looked through the list but really haven't got an idea of how often or how much I should feed my new guy. He's a Agentine Blk & Wht Tegu about 13 inches total body length. Do they process food quickly (providing the habitat is warm) so that daily feeding is required while young or is every other day sufficient? I've wanted one for several years now so I don't want a fat, unhealthy lizard.

I just got my first tegu (as a hatchling) last month. He is voracious! Mine has been feeding daily and likes to eat several times a day. He usually puts away between 15 and 20 crickets at each of his mealtimes. Yesterday he ate 5 pinkies in addition to his usual crickets. I cannot believe how fast he's growing. So, to answer your question more specifically, tegus, like most young lizards, need to be fed daily, and as the note I received from the breeder said, they like to eat smaller meals several times a day.
