Tips on letting my tegu FREE ROAM my room??

tristan Aug 27, 2005 08:14 AM

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there were any tips on how to 'tegu safe' my room.
Is there an easy way to keep him from going poo on my carpet? I've heard of potty training tegus but don't know exactly how.
Maybe some plastic carpet coverings?
Any input from anyone who lets their tegu free roam their room would be appreciated.
The tegu I will be getting is a 4 ft. male blue that I will house in a 6 X 3 X 2 vision. I plan on leaving the cage door open during the day.
Thanks so much!
Tristan

hey tristan.
with you tegu's size tegu proofing will be simple. it WILL go under your bed and anything else it can fit under. when my male got to big to fit under the couch i thought he was going to cry he just layed by it and scratched the floor. the pooing problem can be tough though. find his normal poo time. which is usaully the same time daily. just put him where you want him to go every time, and he will learn. other than that just watch out for sharp things and stuff he can knock over on himself.

hey levi,
Roy pooped today for the first time when i had him on the patio. i tried to get him to go in a pool of shallow water but he didn't. he enjoyed wading in it though.

you got lucky. he enjows the water. my male does ok but my female as i told you earlier is psycho. she is pushing the 3ftmark and can almost jump over the wall of my tub. she hates the water.

Basically just make sure there aren't any sharp objects on or near the floor and make sure that any small spaces he might want to get into are big enough so that either he can get back out, or you can get in to get him out if need be. My Arg B&W free roamed from about 4 or 5 months old on and I did have a problem at first with her wanting to make snacks out of my toes, mistaking them for food so I had to wear socks while she learned they weren't food. As for the pooing problem, I know they can be potty trained but with mine, I give her a warm water bath every day around the same time and she goes in the water. I just bleach the bottom of the tub afterwards. The warm water will usually induce a poo response and they usually like the baths as well. Mine will usually stay in the bath for as long as she wants, then when she's ready to get out she'll go to the bathroom.

Best of luck to you!
