Question for Texas Herpers...

Obediah2 Aug 27, 2005 11:14 AM

I am deciding between a weekend trip to Houston or Joshua Tree in mid October - I am familiar with with Joshua Tree, but I was wondering if there was anything good in the Houston area that time of year. I would love to go down to Brazos Bend State Park and see some alligators if they would still be out. As always - snake info could make the decision easier as well.

Thanks,

Jake

I would stick to Joshua Tree having lived in Houston for 25 years. It will be hotter than death in Houston right now and snake wise it won't be to productive besides copperheads, cottonmouths, and texas rats if your lucky.

No doubt there....

Houston in October can be good. Temperatures will be down by then to highs in the mid 70s or low 80s. Nights are cooler so stuff can be found under trash like in the spring. If it is warm enough you can probably still roadhunt in the evening as well.
Copperheads will be moving in large numbers and October is a good month to find Coralsnakes.

I'd stick to the coast if I were you. Rd cruising the refuges should be effective around dusk. You can expect to see Crayfishsnakes, kings, tx rats, cottonmouths, water snakes, earth snakes and possibly atrox depending on how far east you go. If temps are favorable you should try flipping as the coast is littered with debris. Once you get away from Houston a good bit rd cruising may be favorable for horridus!
Good luck, Scott
