Farmed Nic Boa Question

EmberBall Aug 27, 2005 03:47 PM

OK, lets assume I get the Boas from a quality source, a pair, or trio of unproven morphs, what is the success rate of breeding farmed Nics, should I count on a certain percent of the farmed animals to not make it, how are the temperments compared to CB, eating habits, etc. Will I need to further medicate them?

Hi Dave. I've many different types of Nics both farmed and captive bred and in my case there's little difference in terms of temperament or feeding habits. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never had to treat a farmed import which does not mean there aren't problem animals out there depending on the source. The biggest advantage of buying cb animals is having knowledge of what the parents are. When it comes to picking up higher end morphs such as hypos this is important. How many times have you seen the phrase, "looks like it may be hypo" used? I've even picked up farmed imports speculating they may be hypos but it will be years before I prove them out. The doubt is eliminated if gentically proven parents were used. I've seen some cb hypos recently go for the same price as imports so given a choice why not buy something guaranteed? Unfortunately, less reputable breeders sometimes mix in Colombian blood or other CA locality bloodlines and don't say anything about it. For this reason I sometimes prefer the farmed animals since you know they're the real thing. So you see it's six of one half a dozen of the other lol.
Another advantage of cb over imports is being second generation and hopefully selective bred, the offspring may be cleaner or have more desirable patterns or color than either parent. Feel free to contact me and I'd be glad go into more depth insight on the subject with you.
