A few field pics from this summer. here in Ky...

Phil Peak Aug 27, 2005 07:05 PM

Thought I might share some pic's of a few of the nigra that we have seen in the field this summer. This good sized king was found in Edmonson county.

One found behind my house here in metro Louisville in Jefferson county.

A western Ky kingsnake habitat. This is in Calloway county.

And one of the kings found at this site on that day under a sheet of tin.

One of the projects that my field partner Will Bird and I are currently involved with is assisting with the herp study that is currently under way at Mammoth Cave NP. One of the kings that we have seen in the park.

One of the kings we found when my friends Sean B, Pierson H, and Chris R were up for a visit this past June. This king from Meade county.

Tomorrow we plan on spending the day in the field although conditions are less than good. Hopefully we'll see a few things and learn something. Enjoy the pics! Phil

Thanks Zee. I agree, observing them in the field is fun and in a way adds a lot to the whole kingsnake experience! Phil

Thanks Keith. Yep, we have been getting some really nice contributions from some other states as well. Soon the locality photo's section will be updated and expanded. It is our intent to feature nigra from throughout their range. Phil

I've been wanting to ask you if you are in need of any pics of some AL kings for your site. I searched through my files and only found one pic of a speckled king, but I am sure to find some more blacks before the summer is over.

Also, we went out today and saw 10 and three or four DOR's so the conditions may be better than we think. We found the majority of them under tin in the shade. Have fun!

Thanks Matt. I hope we have as much luck as you have had. We have had some rain recently so despite the heat I'm optimistic. We plan on being in position at some of our sites by the late afternoon hours and then to herp into the night.

We would very much be interested in some nigra pics from Alabama. It is our intent to feature nigra from throughout their range and soon the locality photo section will be updated and expanded.

Any pics you have can be sent to me and please copy Scott as well. His e-mail address is,

Thanks once again! Phil

They make me envy, and want to get a Black King. Have never had one, although I've had a Western Black (nigrita) that I really enjoyed.

Thank you Ameron! East or west the black kings are some of my favorites too. Phil
