Getting new borns to eat

msalem Aug 27, 2005 07:54 PM

I hatched out 4 eggs on 8/1/2005 and cannot get them to eat. I have tried frozen pinkies, live pinkies, frozen rat pinkies, and frozen hoppers. Live hoppers are not readily avialable to me so when I had the chance to feed them live hoppers only one ate but the rest still have not. I would appreciate and advice or tips that anyone can offer because I really do not want to assist feed just yet if I don't have to.

Thanks,
Mohamed

Hi Mohammed ...

You should send those babies right to me, I'll get them eating, haha!

You need live hoppers. If i were you I'd set up a breeding group of mice if you do not have access to hoppers. But, I bet some pet store near you has hoppers or small adults!

Awesome looking clutch you have there!!!

I tried pinkies with mine, F/T and LIVE, but they weren't interested at all. LIVE hoppers or even fuzzies should do the trick. Also try to feed at night.

I have live fuzzies in there now with them that I just got today so hopefully they go for them. I found a place that sells hoppers but it is a little far so I plan on taking a trip out there tomorrow. Is there anything I need to do once I get them to help them eat though? Or do I just leave the hoppers in there and just keep checking in on them?

Thanks,
Mohamed

Feed at night and make sure the babies have a good tight hide box so they feel secure.

I wish I could set up a breeding colony but unfortunately my wife hates the ideas of live rats or mice in the house.

Thanks,
Mohamed

Where do you live? There has to be a place near you to get live hoppers. You really need them, and are going to need them ever time you hatch out babies.

Those are awesome pieds!

I actually was able to get some yesterday but the problem is that I can't get the pieds to eat. One of the 66% hets has eaten 3 times so far and the other 66% het ate twice but the pieds seem not to want to touch anything at all. Is this common with pieds?

Thanks,
Mohamed

Rumor has it that pieds and even het pieds can be picky feeders. Give them a couple of weeks if they don't take it by themselves then make sure you know how to assist feed. Out of my eight all but one ate (f/t) within 2 days of shed - they've all taken their second meal now but that one. She'll strike at it but wont eat it - eventually she'll get hungry enough to follow thru.

Mohamed I had to scent a few crawler mice for a baby pastel this year. They say to use baby check feathers.I used duck feathers and it worked great I just put some feathers in a bowl and put the mouse in for a while and bam it worked like a champ and he is eating now.Just make sure if they eat a few meals like this to make sure and wean them off the scented as soon as possible. But my motto is as long as they will eat I will do whatever it takes to get them to eat.Hope this helps.
