mangrove monitors

toad112081 Aug 27, 2005 09:13 PM

I have been looking at a few different species and I wanted to see some of your guys opinions on mangroves. Any of you keeping them how you like them. I've read where they can be flighty but haven't seen anything about them being aggresive in general. Anyways, anything you can tell me would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

I've found wc mangroves to be flighty and, to be honest, annoyingly so. CB specimens are much more tolerant. In my experience, I have never had one attempt to bite, but they do have a proclivity for relieving themselves on you. Personality-wise, I think they are similar to Timors (another type I cannot stand). If you're looking for a breeding group, mangroves are great because they can be bred year-round. If you are looking for a "pet", please look for something else.

Have not seen any!

lol--Believe it or not, not everyone who breeds monitors posts on the Kingsnake forums. Most of them use local forums. You need to join a local herp group if you haven't already. I have yet to see CB dumerilii on Kingsnake (if there were some, I missed them), but locally, I found a guy quickly--even has eggs incubating right now.

I just got on the waiting list for the clutch due in march '06. If all goes well, I will have 2 new additions next spring. =)
NO MORE after that... yeah...

Hi Tibor,
I know two people in Florida that bred Varanus indicus, and the other, Varanus juxtindicus = but these are few and far in between breeding events....K. Wesiak in Europe bred V. indicus a few times, and I think another person did too in Europe - cant remember the latter persons name. It occurs from time to time...

Excuse my ignorance. Its cute though.

If youre used to hots, mangroves would be cake. Theyre hardy as heck, and are pretty cool display animals. In a group, and in a large cage, they will hunt in a group effort. Its rather intriguing to see. Im sure many montitors would do so if given the chance, but these are the only ones ive observed doing so.

Are you looking for something you can handle, or does it matter? If you want a handelable, mid sized monitor, I suggest dumerili. I like em. =)

Haha... cute hognose.

Good luck finding something that suits you. =)

Norcal pretty much answers your question.
I have 2 indicus, one of which is 12 years old. They do get pretty big (1.5 m). As adults, they certainly are not "flighty". They can be aggressive (defensive) if picked up or otherwise harassed.
