Dennis,
If you are asking what I keep my crickets IN: A plastic tote. About 2 foot tall.
If you are asking WHERE I keep the crickets: A little back room off of the kitchen.
The crickets can't climb the sides of the tote, and I have perfected my tote to cup transfer technique.
Wall to wall toilet paper rolls.
Pick up a roll. dump the tube in the cup..repeat.
My crickets are in two large critter keepers right next to the cham's cage (in an extra bedroom). When the kids come with their kids for visits the crix go down to the basement where the constant chirping won't bother anyone and little, sticky fingers won't be tempted to try to "play" with the crix. The cham goes to my bedroom which is strictly verboten to the little sticky fingers and is also home to a large cage of six parakeets. The cham's cage gets covered on one side so he can't be stressed by the sight of the birds. The birds chirple and yell all day but since a cham would be subject to that in the wild anyway it should'nt bother him. My husband is extremely tolerant to escaped crix (which are generally hunted down with a vengeance anyway)and my weakness for boa constrictors (I have two)....I consider myself an exceptionally fortunate person. Errr...he doesn't know yet of my plans to breed panther chameleons yet *looking around warily*
Don't know if this helps any...just my way of doing things...

Dennis-
I keep mine in the house. Try and find a closet you could keep your cricket container in, this way it is out of view. I would not keep them outside if you can not keep them in the house some where then maybe you could keep them in the garage. Hope this helps!

with how often this subject comes up from you (that's NOT meant to be insulting!) she must be really riding your butt about it!!!
Me...I keep my crickets in a cricket keeper, in the area of my computer desk that is actually supposed to hold the cpu tower.
Prior to that, I kept them under zoe's "tank"...but...since he's not in that horrific torture chamber any more, I don't have that option.
The reason for me keeping them in that area of my computer desk is because then all sides are protected, except the front. My cats love to get behind or beside the cricket keeper and push it around with their heads...so this way, they can still watch the crickets, but can't move the container.
Tell her it's in everyones best interest to keep them relatively close to the actual chameleon, then you don't risk having them escape while being transported TO the chameleon from the garage/basement or where ever.
I'm not sure why, but I very rarely get chirpy crickets. And any that get away...the cats eat almost immediately. If you keep the container clean, the smell is minimal, if you keep a reasonable amount of crickets. (I never keep more than 100 at a time...as I only have the one cham, and he never actually eats the crickets anyway)
Good luck keeping the peace
