one question...het snow vs. double het snow...are the results different or the same?

macgano Aug 28, 2005 12:32 PM

I have always wondered the following...

Example (snowballs):

Breeding double hets produced from albino and axanthic parents produces on average:
1/16 snow
3/16 albino poss het axanthic (snow)
3/16 axanthic poss het albino (snow)
9/16 normal appearing poss hets

Breeding het snows from snow and normal parents...will this pair produce the same results as double hets (above) or do the combined genes act as a "new" recessive give you the following statistics:
1/4 snow
3/4 normal appearing poss hets

Thanks...Rich

It is interchangeable
i.e.:
axanthic het snow same as axanthic het albino
&
albino het snow same as albino het axanthic.

technically you should use what you said.

"Breeding het snows from snow and normal parents"
explain what you mean by het snows?
[axanthic het anow albino het snow]

Normal = meaning does not have axanthic nor albino gene?

Breeding an actual snow ball (homo-double recessive) male to a normal female, does this produce:

HET FOR SNOWS; meaning these can hatch out of 4 eggs one snowball

or

DOUBLE HET FOR SNOWS; meaning these can hatch out of 16 eggs one snowball

Big difference..they are not the same.

Little mind twister hear..Maybe some corn snake breeders can help us out on this one.

No the genes do not intertwine or anything...

A snow is simply homogenous for both traits..therefore all offspring sired by a snow will be heterogenous for both traits.Same outcome as Axanthic to Albino,no different.Just double hets.
