a question for the pro's

Turtlequest Aug 28, 2005 07:24 PM

I noticed something with my new western hogs today.

Today was the first feeding day for my new snakes. I was told by the breeder they both ate 3 frozen thawed pinks prior to my purchase. I put the male into a smaller containter for feeding. He immediatly engulfed the pinky. After I put him back into his tank, I put the female into the "same" feeding container with a pink. Nothing. layed next to the pinky like they were best friends. I left them in the container for an hour, still nothing. I refroze the pinky and put the female back into her tank. About 3 hours later, I thawed the pinky and tried again, only this time I used a different feeding container. In less than a minute the female pounded the pinky.

Do you think the female somehow picked up the scent of the males feeding and was either afraid or intimidated by the scent? Maybe thats why it didn't eat on my first attempt?

Thanks.

which is not what you wanted... WHO KNOWS

I think a lot of people do over analyze situations like this. You couldn't prove whether or not the snake simply didn't "feel like" eating at the time. Perhaps it took her a while to start up the digestive system and THEN want to eat. Point is: who knows. What would be most conclusive is if you repeated the same procedure everytime and recorded their behavior. Up for it? Post back with your results after a month or two.

Someone once gave me a tip on getting westrns to eat and that was defrost a pink, then re-feeze, then defrost it again. So I tried it with 8 newly hatched hogs and 8 out of 8 ate, so there maybe something in it?
